Never had the BA version, but I get the feeling this beer wouldn't be as popular without that name/label. It's good, but I didn't understand the hype the first time I had a bottle.
Can someone please explain to me all the hype and the pricing? I don't get it. It belongs in 6-pack format for $10-11. Just like the rest of their beers. Not $15-20 for 22 oz. Thin and bitter without any chocolate at all. Very mediocre beer. All the NC people seem to praise this and Cold Mountain. Not sure why.
The past two years of Cold Mountain have been terrible. Prior years was good stuff, but not worth standing in like for hours.
I tend to agree that the base Sexual Chocolate is underwhelming and doesn't need a special release; it's harder to say, though, whether greater availability and/or a move to 4/6-packs would be better for Foothills' finances. I think the BA version is much better, though. Lots of breweries are making excellent BA stouts these days, but BASC is still worthy of being Foothills' flagship small annual release.
Living by Hoppin Frog, and having brought a regular and BASC over for a multi-stout side by side, I really don't get how some stouts get so much more hype over others. It's brews like this that really emphasize to me how much branding really plays a role in sales and hype levels. Imagine if this beer was simply called Foothills Stout, and the label just had a Gray Squirrel on it...yeah.
LOL @ providing cardboard boxes for people to take their beer home would increase their carbon footprint "exponentially"
Also consider when it came out... it's been around for a while and there were less of these kind of beers back then (so the hype train built early).
