This topic seems to crop up very regularly here. People seem pretty divided on Brussels as a whole.
I just spent 2 weeks in Belgium, including a week in G(h)ent and 4 days in Brussels. I pretty much concur with your observations entirely, though I didn't find anything particularly noteworthy beer-wise in Gent. Brussels is utterly incoherent as a city.
Are there any magnums or zwanze or carignan or aunis for sale to go right now? Any ceramic pitchers either?
Zwanze is never for take away , all bottels your talking about are for on site consumption except the geuze magnum , that is for take away
Well I'll help since I stopped by today.
They really should have a webcam setup to show the board!
Do they often have the cheese and gueuze sausage available?
Moeder had the sausage if I remember correctly.
The cheese is amazing. I highly recommend it.
made by Dupont with gueuze rind wash
I just want to make sure this gets answered for you. It's one of the most frequently available. I see it more often than not.
Great news, I love this beer, especially with a few years on it.
I was going to overshare, then decided against, but now may's well blurt out that I buy it a lot but don't drink it a lot, so I must have something of a stash by now in some corner of the basement that I try to avoid looking in. Mental note: find and drink... Anyway, you'll find it. I have some Fou if you get shut out and need to trade or something, but, you can certainly drink it on site. Others will have posted here about stores that might carry it, and I've seen it at a couple restaurants in Brussels (La Villette, Bouchéry).
I'll be staying at a hotel near Cantillon from 7/1-7/6 if anyone's around.
Anyone have any inclination on when LPF may be released?
Recently saw a picture of the wall of LPF. So they are just chilling now.
I'll be at Cantillon in 2-5 days (probably multiple times across that time span). Man I hope LPF comes through during that time. Would be a dream
I was there two years ago when LPF was on sale- a 3-pack of them cost 24€!!!
Gueze, Kriek & Vig today. By 2pm Gambrinus was sold out.
This was posted yesterday by the "Drink Belgian Beer" Facebook page.
Same list today for on-prem
Except they stopped selling bottles for a few hours today due to all the tour buses. We're heading back on Monday when it should be much more tame there. It was a zoo today.
My wife and I should be there Monday as well (and probably again later in the week). If you see someone looking around in awe that might be us
What would you guys say was the best of the Zwanze's? Not going to have chance to try them all unless I find some like minded soul to split them with...
I would say check the reviews and make your decision based on that. I'd say try the 14 and another one if you can but in the end just go with whatever reviews piqued your interest. I would also HIGHLY suggest Carignan and Pinot d'Aunis
The 14 is very good....I like the 12 as well.
Like rodzm14 says. Don't bother with Zwanze's. Drink Carignan & Pinot D'Aunis and have your mind blown.
So annoyed at myself for not taking advantage or some of these beers while at Cantillon...I was but a Lambic noob. Excuse to go back though!
Did a large amount of the on-site bottles last weekend with some English fellows we met. My personal favorite was definitely the Zwanze 12. Also wanted to note that 50N4E was near the bottom for me, but it certainly is very interesting and completely worth trying.
I agree too with @rodzm14 and @ElManana. Get Carignan and Pinot D'Aunis. Apparently they bottled a lot of both and are ONLY selling it for on-site, so it should be there for a long time.
Also got try to a Vigneronne 2010 at Moeder and it's bangin! The age on it brought out a lot more tartness but it still had some nice grape flavor.
Has anyone had the Heerengeuze? I splurged on a bottle at De Heeren and it was one of my favorites from the trip.
I can't wait, I'll be in Belgium on June 8 & 9. I hope I can find some thirsty folks to share a bunch of bottles with!
Does anyone know if any of the cantillons for sale right now have the cork that says "bottled in 2015" ?
None of the bottles I bought last week had been bottled in 2015... Think the magnums were bottled in 2013...
What are the bottle limits usually like? I'll be over that way next week and can't wait.
Vig and Bruscella are limit 3 right now. The standards (Gueuze and Kriek) were either limit 6 or limit 12, can't remember. That was all they had when I was there a couple days ago.
Not sure about what is available currently, but I picked up Kriek and Rose a few weeks ago, both bottled in March 2015 with 2015 corks.
Good stuff! However I think 50N4E is one of the best beers they ever made. De coloribus et gustibus non est disputandum right .
I agree my favorites onsite would probably be, in order: Pineau d'Aunis, 50N, Zwanze 2014, Carignan
Pineau is the one bottle, along with Cuvee Florian (Zwanze 14) I have ordered the last 4 times I have been there.
Of what they have now:
Bottled in 2015:
Grand Cru Bruoscella 2012
Bottled in 2014:
They were out of the Rose when I was there, though the one I picked up in a bottle shop was from 2014.
Thanks @treznor and @warnerry
May 28-29 = me in brussels w/o the wife. i'll be drinking alone. so sharing some cantillon would be quite alright.
I Can maybe be there on 28may , Will see one week before
