I'm thinking about getting a few more beers for the ever-growing cellar. These will be for the folks. My parents will always take a sip of my homebrew and will always shun the fansy craft stuff. They drink very light ales and lagers. They cap out around Sam Adams territory. I'm not looking to win them over, but just looking to give them something decent to share around the holidays. I'm leaning away from dark, boozy, or too sour. Any ideas for a win?

It has been my experience that people who are used to drinking mass produced US lagers, tend to like wheat beers and amber beer. Call it a gateway beer or whatever, but that is how I usually break them in.

Maybe a Bruery White Oak? Or a cellared Bigfoot that's lost its hops, or other barleywine.

So basically anything you wouldn't normally cellar? Why not just buy a 12 pack of bud light whenever they come around?

Yeah. I know it's a little counter-intuitive. I think the bottom line is that it needs to be something that a Bud Light drinker would swallow and would appreciate that I tucked the majority of the bottle away for myself. Of course I'm going to make them try some, so it may as well be something they can get along with.

What about an Oktoberfest? SA is even good.

I don't think I've ever heard of an Oktoberfest being sat down for more than a year. Isn't the idea that the beer is brewed for spring and drank by the beginning of winter?

If your folks don't care for craft beer, then why bother using cellar space for beer for them? Get a 6, or 12 or something when they are coming in, or even a couple of interesting beers that they would / might like. From what you say, I don't know that the would catch or appreciate (sorry for the choice of words) the nuances of a fresh versus aged version of something.

I think you are asking for two opposite things.

Do they like liquor or wine? If so, then there are lots of cellar-able beers that have similar characteristics to some kinds of liquor (some Weizenbocks, for example, can taste like Port) and lots of beers (non-sour) can have great wine characters. If you want to give them interesting beer, maybe find a flavour in beer that they like in another drink.

Look into New Glarus beers like Moon Man, Dancing man wheat, spotted cow. All are good solid beers but are not too crazy on the palate.

I'll trade for 3F, Bells or whatever you can't get. I have to drive to Chicago to get NG. :slight_frown:

I wouldn't bother with it. Winning them over, whether you can or not, just doesn't seem like a priority. They like what they like, changing that isn't going to create a better bond. If it does, your relationship with them has considerable issues already.
