I forgot to put my dry hops in a bag. How can I avoid getting most of those bits and pieces in when I bottle?

Putting your beer in a fridge will help encourage them to drop to the bottom but getting your fermenter out of the fridge prior to racking to your bottling bucket/keg may bring some back into suspension.

How many oz we talking here? And pellets or whole cone?

I exclusively dry hop with pewllets and without a bag, sometimes with as much as 3-4 oz. Sure, I get some particles in the finished product, but who cares (heady anyone?)? I'm a firm believer that this helps with both aroma and flavor and those are more important to me. As soon as I stopped using muslin bags for DHing, I noticed a significantly positive difference in my hoppy beers.

Of course if just a few ounces of pellets or any amount of whole cone, I'd think you wouldn't have to worry too much at all.

Rack carefully, above the hops (if they sank) or below the hops (if they floated).

You can attach a small piece of woman nylon sock(sanitized) to the hose tip inside the fermenter to avoid racking hop debris

Even better, attach it over the exit end of your racking cane / auto siphon (the end going into your bottling bucket)

Just cold crash, and put a sanitized paint strainer bag over the auto siphon. I put it over the suction end, but either end will work.

Not sure this is 'even better'. For a short time, until the end of your hose is submerged, you risk introducing oxygen that is avoidable. Think of it like a faucet aerator.

Five gallon paint strainer bags are 2 for $2-$3 dollars at home depot. Put it on the end of the siphon that goes into the wort you are transfering. The good thing about the bags is they are big enough that you don't have to find away to attach it to the racking cane/auto siphon. Just hold on to it near the top of cane. You can also use them to strain your wort from the kettle to primary if you use buckets.

I hate to admit this but I've duct-taped the paint strainer bag to the auto siphon, out of laziness...so as not to have to hold the damn thing.

Yeah, it can get a little uncomfortable sometimes. But I figure once or twice every three weeks for 5 minutes isn't that bad. It builds character:slight_smile:

As long as you sanitized your duct tape in a microwave oven, you should be fine.

    Ouch.

I get a pack of 2 or 3 in there for the above $3 or $4 bucks.. I re use them until they are so hard to clean I just throw them away after they are used.

My LHBS sells them for a high price as well. I think around $5-$6 a piece. The ones at home depot are the exact same. They proably buy them at home depot open the package and resell them as singles.

According to "Norm" from yahoo answers

The phrase often used is "adversity builds character" and conveys the key idea that if one does not avoid difficulties in life one learns to handle them and becomes inured to difficulty

oh and your autosiphon works faster than mine, too!

(Probably the result of strenuous character building exercises)

Or maybe he's using a larger diameter autosiphon.

your homebrew shop should sell a funnel with a screen that can attach to the side of your bottling bucket. you just rack the beer from the fermentor through the funnel. think it costs like $4. aerates the beer a bit for priming too.
