I looked up this favorite place to recommend and I see their web domain has expired and Google says they're "temporarily closed." Anyone in Munich proper have any insight as to what may be going on with this treasure of a beer location?
The Forschungsbrauerei website says they are looking for new hosts who will continue to run the Bräustüberl with love and passion. The Beers are available at the brewery. See the website: https://hopfenhaecker.de/2025/09/22/bierverkauf-geoeffnet/
I couldn't even get to the website -- told me the domain was for sale. Got a link? I'd be interested in the salary.
That's concerning. It's only a few years since the last change in management. I was there about a year ago and the beer tasted the same as on my last visit 30 years before.
I looked them up while in Munich in late September, thinking I may drop in.... Dumbfounded to see they are only selling Bier to go, and I read the restaurant will be closed until at least JAN 2026. Looking for new proprietors or something.... damn! Love their Blonder Bock...
It seems the news is less ominous than it appears. According to a statement put out by the brewery, the lease had come to its natural end after ten years. The restaurant will be refurbished over the next three months and new tenants should be in place for the strong beer season in spring. Would be awful if this idiosyncratic place didn't make it to its 100th anniversary in 2030.
I was there a few months ago. This brewery has a very colorful past. You should look up its history. It has been up and down for 95 years. I was closed twice during this time that I know of. I was first there in the 90's and it needed renavations then. Now it needs to be gutted and redone. They are only severing beers to go as of now I wonder why. One of my friends here said it had something to do with building code enforcement whit would not be a surprise. It has never been one of my favorite places near Munich but I dont want to see it die either.
Here's hoping someone steps up... have always enjoyed visiting Forschungs... love the Blonder Bock, and they had a killer Spätzle.... Prost!
I just saw this post while scrolling. Hopefully this isn't the end of the line for them. They closed for almost 2 years back in 2010, so there is a precedent. Before that closure the blonder bock and export were the only 2 beers they served. They were damn good, too. After that, they added a helles, dunkel, and weiss. None of those new ones were particularly great, but their food became off the charts good. Their pan-fried spätzle might be the best I've ever had. The 2 original beers tasted mostly the same, too. I think they also opened a little mini-location near the Viktualienmarkt, but I never visited it myself. I believe there's a "craft" brewer making American style beers there, too. He might even be the normal brewer doing it as a hobby? I forget the story and it's been a couple years. Anywhoo, I'll keep my fingers crossed that they can make it work. No clue when I'll make it back, but that's one of my favorite places in Munich.
