Hey guys I'm fairly new to the craft beer community but I've been enjoying every second of it. I love going to different places and trying new beers and writing about them. The fact that I am new means I have a lack of knowledge on a few things. I recently went to a small deli that does have a decent supply of different beers. While searching I found a bottle of Cigar Citys Brewing Jai Alai....an ipa I hear many people speak of and for only $3 it was a must buy. When I came home and did research I found that Cigar City has only been making it in cans for about a year now.....just wondering what you guys think I should do with the bottle?? Drink the old brew(I know not all beers age well) or just keep it ? Any suggestions would be appreciated...thanks guys
Well, conventional wisdom would tell you that it won't as good as a fresh Jai Alai.. So, I would drink it, but temper your evaluation of Jai Alai in general. It's a great beer and shouldn't be judged by something that's over 3 years old. I'm not sure where you're located, but if you're in a region where Cigar City is available, trying getting some fresh and seeing exactly what age does to an IPA. Would probably be a good lesson for you as a newcomer.
drink it, probably won't kill you and could have an interesting taste unless for some reason the novelty of a full bottle as a collectible appeals to you. I collect empty cans/bottles.
Has CCB dropped the bottles of whatever they started canning? At one point I'm pretty sure they were doing both, but I suppose it could have been an overlap when they were transitioning to the cans... To the OP, drink it and know that if it is in fact a year old, it will not be nearly as good as it is when fresh. Hoppy beers are better when fresh, few US/US style hoppy beers hold up for more than 3-6 months.
They haven't bottled Jai Alai in about a year and a half. If it is the original Jai Alai with that green and orange label and not White Oak or Humidor Jai Alai (also in singles bottles), then it's not going to be very good. I think some of the freshness ****'s overdo it on how fresh they want IPAs sometimes, but Jai Alai truly does take a nosedive in flavor after about 4 months.
First canning of Jai Alai was Oct 6 of last year......so your bottle is at least that old. I've seen leftover bottles of it in less reputable "beer and smokes" stores as recently as last week. Luckily the Publix next door has it 2 days old.
Hey guys...it's definitely the original jai alai bottle...is there anyway to post pics from your phone ? I'll gladly post it
