that is 4 oz for each addition for a grand total of 8 oz total. I also used wlp 001 and fermented @ 65. came out clean, low esters, it reminds me a lot of SNPA.

If you found some in a remote area of the San Louis Valley, there is a good chance that those are native wild hops. I would do some small batches to try those, when you do get them. The ones I have had that are not far removed from wild hops are harsh and nasty.

The crush and roll test netted a citrus and pine aroma from the few decent cones left on the vine. The problem is that there are some male plants putting off cotton right next to the female plants. At least I think they are male plants. I've got a year before I need to really know. My father in law has roots deep into this area and was telling me the American Indians of the area used to chew the leaves for their medicinal properties, and as I said before the cones smelled viable for brewing. This batch was a small test batch, and that batch will also be a test batch as well. I really enjoyed this project though. It was fast and off the hip, but not knowing exactly what I was going to have in the end was a lot of fun.

I was talking about the ones up the canyon. Those might be different.

I did not like beer made with LR, a neo-mexicanus derivative.

    Good luck, sounds like fun.

Just found a number of vines growing up trees on our farm in Addison. How have you found working with the wild ones?

After comparing leaf structure, cone structure, and flavor profile, the hops I found a couple years back seem to be identical to the centennials I planted. While I enjoyed the mystery of the find, I am certain they are a domestic cultivar. I never got back to the canyon where I found the second batch of hops, but am still wanting to check them out. Some cultivars of neomexicanus have been proven enough to warrant being sold by Hopunion. We'll see I guess, won't know if you don't try. I suggest going for it.

An option is to brew a smaller batch (e.g., a couple of gallons) with the hops to 'road test' them before committing to a larger batch.

    Cheers!

Highly variable. The ones I think are truly wild had almost no aroma, just a little herb, and I'd guess 3-4 % AA. One of my roadside finds (Bolton, VT) is pretty decent, almost English tasting. One from here in Duxbury smells like old socks. You just have to try them. I dry hop some Genny Cream and sample after a week or so.

Hell yes I would make a brew, never seen any around Rutland, VT but if I did I would pickem, dry,em and mark the spot. I f worthwhile, would go back, witht the landowners permission, and dig rhizomes in the spring,

This post is old, but whatever came of the wild hops. I have found lots of wild hops growing in the mountains here in Arizona. No actual hops on the bines, but I did harvest rhizomes to try growing at my house.

One set was possibly centennial and the other I never made it back to.

There have been numerous native stands of wild hops found in New Mexico and Colorado, several have been domesticated in the past few years.

Found some wild hops in Amsterdam last year. They looked and smelled pretty good, so I harvested them and gave them to a local brewer. He put them in the freezer, forgot about them, then remembered them and brewed up a small batch using them as dry hops.

Weird and wonderful is how I'd describe drinking the beer in Butcher's Tears (my local brewery) taproom.

You can find some wild hops on the Lexington MA biking trail. It used to be a rail line that brought hops into the breweries in Boston back in the day. Inevitably some fell out and grow wild.

Mind you, they get picked WAY before they are ready because the local beer geeks already know they are there, so they aren't of the same quality as some of the finds mentioned here.

There's an abundance of wild hops on my wife's family farm that grow like weeds in Ukraine. They smelled amazing and now that I brew beer I'd like to brew some from them. Damn US customs probably won't let me bring any into the country though.

My father in law's neighbor has unidentified hops in his yard in Loveland, co, I believed they were centennial, brewed with them.

There are wild hops on a backpacking bike camping trail in Illinois, I'm going to harvest them.

If they have seeds, I will use very fine mesh bsgs.
