I talked to a guy at a store in Michigan and he mentioned something about Founders using artificial flavoring in their beers (New this year). I just tried to breakfast stout this year at my store in OH, they hadn't received it at this store in MI but he said be prepared for it to not live up to last years. I thought it was good, but nothing really that great. Has anyone heard of any truth to this?

Frangelic Mountain Brown used artificially flavored coffee.

FBS uses real coffee, real chocolate, nothing artificial there. Founders fruit beers use real fruit, nothing fake their. If something has changed it has not been mentioned by any staff, brewers or other people in the know. Speculation and misinformation can run rampant, your best bet is to go direct to the source with these type of questions.

Some random guy at a store in Michigan, no credibility there for starters. People argue each year about beers not tasting as good as previous years, I expect this for FBS this year as well. I know I can't wait to see it on MA shelves, whenever that is.

I would hope they use real ingredients with the premium prices they charge for their beers.

Artificial flavours wouldn't necessarily taste worse anyway

Yeah! Like beaver anus juice in raspberry candy!

That'd be a natural flavor, actually... but yeah.

These threads seem to pop up ever year. What I want to know is, how exactly do you know the current batch is worse than the last? I mean, barring serious infections in the beer, how can your palate remember the exact taste of something you had 12 months ago? Perhaps your palate has changed and you don't like it as much. Doesn't mean the quality of the beer has changed.

On top of the fact that Founders posted a photo to their Instagram that showed all of the coffee and chocolate going into this years FBS....

Why is there so many Founders topics in the forums? The top 5 forum posts right now are about them

Dude, you gotta go straight to Founders for concerns like that!

On a related side note, there's always a slight difference year to year in every brew. It depends on the condition of the weather and what the season was like in regards to how well the hops, barley, etc. grew. Every batch varies from previous batches and brews tastes are certainly not a carbon copy identical output of the prior years release.

But all in all, I love everything about Founders. What they represent, their attitude towards craft and the passion they have for everything they do. I'd ignore that dude in Michigan and just try it yourself.

it's also because, artificial flavouring or not, frangelic was terrible and was the epitome of why i will never again buy multiples from their backstage series before trying the beer in question.

and yes, frangelic used artificially flavoured coffee in frangelic. it was right there in plain letters on the bottle. it's also why whole foods refused to carry the beer.

I personally thought that Frangelic was a very good beer and tasted exactly as it was advertised. I buy the fact that some flat out did not like it but I think there were too many who were expecting somehow that a hazelnut flavored coffee brown ale would not taste like a hazelnut flavored coffee brown ale.

I will agree will the second part of your statement, a valuable lesson can be learned, you buy a large quantity of a product you have nothing to go off of but hype and preconceived notions you are increasing your chances of getting burned. I think if more folks were to be as cautious as you are now we would see a lot less Founders "hate" threads following recent Backstage releases.

    Founders bashing--so popular.

Why will Harvest Ale and Backwoods Bastard be so hard to get? Same for KBS next March/April.
