And in the beer. That flavoring is as natural as it gets.

Any beer brewed with "hazelnut coffee" is using artificial flavoring. There's no such thing as a hazelnut coffee bean. That situation was so overblown.

Don't hate Founders, but I do hate their prices for any limited release. I'd also have to say the last 2 backstage beers were huge disappointments. I really hope they bottle Panther Cub next.

Last year, this hit MA in late August. I can remember having the beer for the first time with about three weeks on it.

The only one I am aware of is Frangelic Mountain Brown used artificial hazelnut flavoring.

and yes, frangelic used artificially flavoured coffee in frangelic. it was right there in plain letters on the bottle. it's also why whole foods refused to carry the beer.

Apparently the Whole Foods in Hinsdale, IL didn't get the memo as I was able to purchase a bottle there.

Exactly. Any flavored coffee used in a beer will be artifically flavored because that is the ONLY way to get flavored coffee. The question with FMB should be why they didn't use regular coffee and real hazelnuts. It would give both flavors without any artificial. My guess is that the coffee would overpower the natural hazelnut, so they used artifically flavored hazelnut coffee so the hazelnut flavor would be more prominent.

I talked to a guy at a store and he said their is a guy running around to stores in Michigan and saying things and that I shouldn't listen. Seemed legit.

My only problem with Founders is that they don't distribute to Northern California.

The bigger issue is, FMB, Bolt Cutter and Doom were all pretty disappointing to me for the price, especially since you can usually count on Founders to be quality stuff. It won't stop me from trading for KBS, FBS, Backwoods, etc. but the Backstage releases should be their best of the best.

I have to believe that Founder's didn't use actual hazelnuts for two reasons:
    1) I don't know at what phase the nuts and coffee were added. I would guess after fermentation. The fats that are present in nuts can cause a lot of problems with carbonation and head retention. Nuts could also cause issues with flavor stability.
    2) The quantity of hazelnuts required to create a big hazelnut flavor would have been very expensive.

I personally thought FMB was quite delicious. That said, I am quite fond of hazelnut coffee.

Call me naïve but since when did brewers start using artifical flavoring??? This is the first I'm hearing of it and quite honestly, I'm a little shocked. I thought it broke an unwritten beer law or something. Idk

weird. the whole foods i walked into in chicago said they refused to carry it because of the artificial flavouring. thought it would be chain wide.
