That is a capital idea but...

It is a bit of a challenge to come up with a new beer every Sunday so I tend to 'space beers out' such that I can discuss a 'new' beer every Sunday.

Have you ever posted on the New Beer Sunday thread? I would encourage you do to do so. The NBS community is a very welcoming bunch of folks.

I hope to 'see' you there.

    Cheers!

I'm not great at reviewing beers. I'm more of a WBAYDN type person.

A lager for people who find many craft lagers overhopped, perhaps?

I'll try this if I see it. Notch sometimes puts out a corn lager called the Mule that's really nice; it provides evidence that the AAL descriptor isn't necessarily synonymous with dull, flavorless brew.

EDIT: I didn't realize I was responding to such an old post. Hello to the past!

If that's the case Founders failed. This is way over hopped for a lager, tastes like a session IPA. I enjoyed it, definitely refreshing, but not true to style.

:open_mouth: According to Founders, it's 20 IBUs - which was pretty typical (if not a bit low in the northeast) for US-brewed AAL's from Repeal up to around the 1970s or so... and, of course, lots of Euro and other imported lager are still at that level or higher (Pilsner Urquell = 42 IBUs). Heck, even Corona Light is 18 IBUs.

Maybe but I don't taste the hops in Pilsner Urquel or in Corona. I love hops don't get me wrong but my wife and my dad for instance found this beer to be repulsive. Why? Because they don't like hops. A Budweiser drinker typically won't like it for the same reason just as a Corona drinker or Pilsner Urquell drinker probably won't like it. Tastes like a session IPA with lemongrass. But I did enjoy it and found it refreshing but not true to style.

I love that Founders is trying to compete in this market, but if I'm craving an AAL or something similar, it's hard for me to beat snagging a six-pack of Naragansett Lager pint cans for $5.99 at my local Total Wine.

Nonsense. If you like beer, there’s a lager somewhere out there for you! And no offense to Founders, but in no way should they be the brewery that “settles it.”

I bought a 6 pack of this last night. I thought it was great. Even my wife an father-in-law, who both hate IPAs for being too bitter, thought it was fantastic. I taste very little bitterness in Solid Gold.

If rating truly to style, how does this one not get a five or very close too it?

So many different examples of lager im sure youd find one youd like. If you base your decision off not liking lagers similar to budweiser or miller, then you are with many peoplr here who agree. But try some german examples if you havent.

They were just putting this out when I walked in this morning. On first blush the hops show a rounded firmness rather than sharpness but they're definitely in there. Next thing is write a review.

Every AAL drinker I know is #1. The Miller Lite guys drink Miller Lite, the Busch Light guys drink their Busch Light. Whether they grab it at the drive thru or a bar they don’t care how mutit costs. Don’t get me wrong, they will bitch about it, but it won’t keep them from drinking it and they won’t try anything else. Except maybe a swig of mine and make a face and hand it back.

I grabbed a 15-pack today @ Roger Wilco in Pennsauken. I didn’t keep my receipt but I think it was $10.99. It’s a pretty good price for a well made AAL. I’m a bit of a Narragansett loyalist but I’ll definitely buy this again if I’m looking for an adjunct lager with a bit more flavor.

Does anyone know if this is all malt or is there an adjunct grain? I'm having no luck finding the malt bill anywhere online.

Can't go wrong with the Schlenkerla Helles. It's really interesting that their Helles picks up a smoke character from just being brewed in the same kettle as their regular beers even though they do not use a smoked malt. It's a great beer that just soaks up some smoke essence. On Solid Gold. I'm very interested to see how Founders entering the pale lager market might make people more aware that lots of craft breweries are making very approachable pale lagers. Now, most of those are not in the price range discussed so again could Founders creating more awareness create more BMC buyers that look around and are willing to say buy a 15-pk or case and then a 4 or 6-pk of craft lager that is higher priced for example.
