With the release of Dissenter, it seems cellaring these beers in hopes of a 5-year vertical would be pointless. (That was my original thought)

So, myself and some local buddies will be doing this vertical soon....and was wondering if anybody else was doing this/has done this with their tasting group?

To be honest, I am kind of excited to drink Bolt Cutter for the first time since the winter it came out. I have heard from a few friends that it is refined and smooth....contrary to many people's disdain for this beer.

Also curious to see how Frangelic Mountain has held up...guessing a lot of the hazelnut coffee has fallen off a bit....but, again, it's been so long since I have had it, I am not sure what to expect.

Anyways, I won't ramble any further.....

...any comments or thoughts on any of these beers are welcome.....

....and I will certainly follow up after we do this vertical.

    Cheers!

So how far back does your vert go exactly? Blushing Monk, CBS, FMB, Boltcutter, Doom, Mango Mag, Sweet Repute, Dissenter?

Never had CBS or Blushing Monk, but I enjoyed the rest to various degrees. Least of which Dissenter and Mango. Actually I don't think I enjoyed the Mango really at all. The rest I felt were better than generally received by the masses...

They are all so different - it will be interesting to hear how they are all holding up. Looking forward to seeing you post your results here.

bolt cutter is still pretty gross. Had a CBS at thanksgiving last year and it was terrible but apparently there is some bottle variation. CBH was pretty good recently but better fresh. Had blushing monk this past spring and it was amazing.

Surprised to hear about the CBS. Had a glass at the Founders Breakfast/Stoutfest at Armsby Abbey and thought it was still pretty damn good.

Haven't had a CBS since Super Bowl Sunday of this year, but I thought it was as amazing as it ever was. Not expecting my last bottle to be any different.....but, I will report back none-the-less.

...and aged CBS continues to polarize...what else is new...

I guess that's true. My expectations for it were pretty low considering the age on it. Maybe that's why.

I opened My last bottle of CBS 3weeks ago (Had 3 of them). I can say the first bottle fresh was great, the second bottle was good (1 1/2 after release), and the third bottle was terrible. just went south really bad. I heard from multi people that CBS just didn't hold up after time. It really must be true. To be honest my brother and I could not finish the bottle and sadly had to drain pour it.

So what was so terrible about it? Oxidation?

I think Founders missed a trick with the Backstage series. They just feel a bit rushed and not very well thought out to me.

    Enjoy the vertical though OP

Mine tasted like licorice and apple flavored hookah tobacco. Horrendous.

    Co
Couldn't agree more, they're not around long enough and the amount they make is too small.

Yea, they missed the trick for sure, and that really surprises me. With all the experts on Beeradvocate, there is no excuse for Founders jumping the shark.

p.s. because the interwebs do not convey tone very well, that was sarcasm in case anyone missed that.

I'd be interested to hear what happened to Frangelic Mountain Brown. I though the hazelnut was extremely aggressive in that (and not enjoyable). If it's died down it may actually be a good beer now.

Just had one of my last two Frangelics the other night; it's drinking very well now. Not as sweet as when it first came out, and still plenty of hazelnut notes, everyone else that tried it really enjoyed it as well. The BA version is totally better though.

Had one of the Bolt Cutters about 3 months ago, and it's showing it's age a little, but the heat has died down and you get a huge malt background. The bottle I had 2 months before that was drinking fantastic though. I have another Bolt Cutter to open soon along with the last Frangelic.

Most of these were best drank fresh. Opened a CBH 2 months ago and was aweful.

I had the Frangelic Brown about 3 months ago. The hazelnut hasn't gone anywhere. For you East Coasters with Dunkin Donuts, this this beer smells - and closely tastes - like straight up Dunkin Donuts hazelnut flavored coffee. In fact, it was so similar that I asked my wife to run to DD and grab a coffee. We did a side-by-side, and the aroma couldn't have been more spot on. I really wasn't impressed with this beer. It wasn't crazy sweet, but the hazelnut aroma and perceived taste made it feel like I was drinking a cloying sweet "dessert" beer. Honestly, the smell just seemed artificial. Just my 2 cents...
