how long was that? I would think 3-4 months wouldn't change it that much would it? did you notice though that the fridged BB had more bourbon then the cellared?

I thought it still tasted like Backwoods, just less bourbon. I will say, for those who like a more mellow brew, it was dangerously easy to drink. Way less heat.

I do have some Curmudgeon in the fridge also, might as well do a side by side since you said something about it.

I haven't tried the cellared one yet...I just put one in the fridge yesterday, so I'll try it this weekend.

EDIT: I believe Backwoods was released last November, so it's been almost a year.

oh wow a year, im thinking just a couple months on it shouldn't do it any harm then, I think most people are saying anything from 3-6 months makes it better?...

It really just depends on your preference. If you like bourbon and a boozy punch, drink it fresh! If it is too much for you, let it sit until it suits your style.

After cellaring beer for the last year or so, I've come to realize that if it was in a bourbon barrel, I'd rather drink it as soon as possible. Experiment was successful, I would have never known otherwise.

EDIT: But I have a number of other beers (sours, old ales, other high gravity brews) that I do prefer to age. Just takes a little trial and error.

I like bourbon, but I age my Backwoods Bastard for about 10 months to get the taste that I like best.

Curious...do you typically drink your bourbon on the rocks?

I knew it! Cool. I have a feeling that people who like their bourbon straight will prefer fresh and on the rocks will want a little age. It's a good starting point for anyone trying to decide how long to age their Bastard.

If anyone is coming to Holland or Belgium soon i will be more than willing to trade some Westvleteren 12 for a 4-pack! What a good beer, had it a few months ago!

Not exactly true. I drink my bourbon neat (no ice, no water) and George T Stagg is my favorite (around 70% ABV), but I prefer Backwoods with a year on it.

You are a boss. I wish I was coming to Belgium soon to take you up on that.

I said it was a good place to start, not that it was truth...

Stagg is great btw, I prefer Thomas H Handy by a small margin.

There certainly may be a tendency to what you're saying.

Buffalo Trace does some very fine work!

I am going to need to get some this year, but will most likely have to trade something for it.

It's definitely one of my favorites. IMO it's best enjoyed with a little bit of age on it.

I've got a bottle from last year with your name on it if you want. I'll leave it with a friend in Indy and you can pick it up at his bottle shop in Carmel some time. Everyone should try it and I just learned that I prefer it fresh. I'll be passing through Indy the weekend of Darkness Day.
