I've been to SEA/PDX several times; basing that primarily on those visits and what I've seen around here. I'm probably missing quite a bit of smaller stuff. Any recommendations?

I was impressed with Wild Ride's coffee vanilla stout, though only available in bombers as far as I know. For the price though, it's hard to beat in that style.

    Sure:
Cavatica Stout from Fort George (they actually do a ton of stouts and have a month where they feature a staggering number, check out their listing here on BA)
    Dark Star from Fremont
Kentucky Dark Star also from Fremont (along with all the variations)
    Trumpeter from Skagit
    Tsunami Stout from Pelican
Reuben's Imperial Stout (they do several different versions)
    Suge Knight by Boneyard
    Nemesis by Triplehorn
The Big Lebrewski by Naked City

Just off the top of my head ... of course stuff like The Abyss and Black Butte XX go without saying. And also, as others have said, where we lack here in the NW is that few of our breweries until more recently bothered with the six pack format. Plus, many of us can't be bothered to consistently review so as a visitor it can be difficult to rely on what's reviews alone to determine what to drink.

In the Seattle area Snoqualmie Falls and Georgetown makes a pretty good porter.

Deschutes Porter is pretty solid too.

Had their Imperial Bean Me Up Coffee Stout which was great. Was really curious about their Baltic Porter.

A case of FBS is the only beer I brought with me when I moved to Portland. I'd definitely love to have it out, but I just had Barley Brown's Breakfast Stout and it was damn good!

A little easier to find, but there's also Oakshire's Overcast Espresso Stout and HUB's Survival 7-grain stout. Not quite as good, but certainly enjoyable and available year-round. I'll certainly second the Laurelwood and nth the Barley Brown's. Cascade's Oblique Black & White is different, but might scratch that itch. Plus it's fantastic.

I'm going to smugtalk Founders for a moment - I got to try KBS and the Imperial Stout during the Craft Brewers Conference. Both were very excellent beers, but I didn't feel that either were better than many other big stouts we usually see in the winter. I understand why it's a beloved beer because it was great, but I don't get why I so frequently see it as one of the most revered beers in the nation. Then again, I still usually buy a couple bottles of Abyss to stash away for a year or two, so maybe I'm the idiot.

I think the problem lies in trying to compare the craft beer landscape in the Midwest or back East with what we have out here. You mention that beers like KBS and FIS really didn't strike you as any better than many other big stouts we see out here, and frankly, I would agree with you. However...

I lived on the East Coast for a number of years, and if you were to ask me what were the BA imperial stouts that were normally (and/or readily) available out East, I'd have a hard time coming up with anything. Beers like imperial biscotti break, brunch weasel, Oil of Aphrodite, BCBS, Central Waters BA reserve, etc., are all quite excellent, but they weren't (and aren't) readily available the way (for instance) KDS, Bbomb, C&C Bbomb, and the Abyss are out here.

KBS has been around a long time now, and so most folks are familiar with it and have had a chance to try it at some point, and even after all this time, the quality of the beer is still readily apparent to most folks. Arguably, ANTEAD, BA Abraxas, BA Hunahpu variants, etc., are all superior to KBS, but it's nearly impossible to find/obtain those beers, so there's no point in expressing any hope that you might be able to find them at a local store if you go to the right place at the right time. KBS, on the other hand, is a beer you can likely find/obtain, if you're willing to make a concerted effort to get some (my trading partner/buddy in SEPA will sometimes toss in a bottle with the boxes he sends me, and I know KBS isn't a beer that he spends a lot time and effort trying to land). I think that's a factor, and one possible explanation, for why people tend to get so excited about KBS. For a lot of folks, KBS really is by far and away the best BA RIS they've ever been able to try. Not because it's necessarily all that fantastic (though I think it's very good), but because the beers that are arguably superior to it, simply aren't available to buy or try for most of the craft beer consuming public in the Midwest, East Coast and South Atlantic.

Had KBS, breakfast stout, backwoods bastard, FIS, and Prairie Bomb! on a trip back east a few weeks ago.

For the hype of the founders lineup, I was underwhelmed. However, all of those beers were very very good and if they are widely distributed, I can see why people like them so much. But IMO, KBS doesnt even compare to something like Parabola.

Breakfast stout. i dont get it. Good beer, but absolutely nothing special

Backwoods bastard was really good. Would love to get that beer distributed out in Oregon.

Prairie Bomb is absolutely fantastic though (yes I know this isnt a Founders beer. but it is hyped on here and I think well deserved hype)

Agreed on the Prairie Bomb! The chili peppers make it something special.
