Last night I was at a local bar and saw that they had bottles of cbs available for 25 bucks. It was a very welcome surprise! Anyone else have any stories of finding supposedly rare beer at local bars?

The bar I went to on Friday gave a free pour of it when you bought a 5$ pour of kbs.

Definitely still available in bars, but gone in nearly all retail stores.

oh, i know a retail store where the owner has CBS still hidden in his office... peddling it to doctors and lawyers while hiding it from the folks that actually want it...

He has actually taken the remaining 4-5 bottles home. He bathes each bottle every night and puts them to sleep in their own beds wearing bonnets.

Had some a week or so ago at a tasting and was surprised to find that the maple had almost fallen completely out of the beer. Good but not great IMO.

Great place! My buddy said it was nuts there. Glad you got a couple of pours.

Interesting. I know of a similar shop with a similar situation. Does the owner drive a navy blue altima that he shuttles those 4-5 cbs bottles around in?

I had some pours myself at Captains, rumor has it they still have a barrel that eventually will be released this year, be on the lookout for the announcement.

That is why aging that beer or sitting on it for long is ******ed...its best fresh if you want the maple qualities

yeah I had it and It was good, but it didn't blow my mind like people hyped it up to be. I haven't had it fresh but I have had kbs fresh from the tap on kbs day and to this day no other beer has come close.

I must be one of the few that fresh KBS on tap has failed to fully impress. It was a great beer but it was quite strong in the alcohol department as I recall. Now, I had just spent all night drinking so you would think that wouldn't stand out much, but it did. Some of the aged bottles are far better imo. My favorite stout is hands down BCBS. I am amazed every time I open a bottle that its just as great, if not better than I remember.

Ahhhh, it must be that time of the month to have this debate.

I just cracked one of my two bottles of CBS 2 weeks ago when my first son was born. And it did not disappoint at all and the maple did come through. Better than fresh? Debatable, but good in its own right. I've had CBS before, and I was still blown away by how good it was.

As for KBS and aging. I did a tasting of '10 and '11, and the '10 was by far the better tasting beer. I did it with a couple of friends and we all pretty much agreed on this point. I'll let my case of '11 and '12 age before I put my hand in that cookie jar.

Is maple syrup really a flavor that fades that quickly? I dont think i've ever opened up an old bottle of maple syrup and said gee this was mapley-er when I first bought it. I think it's a result of notoriously poor blending by Founders. Which is why you can buy a 4-pack of KBS and none of them will taste the same.

They should do that quickly, old cbs is def not as good, I remember the keg from a few years ago that was aged and the bottle form this year was lightyears ahead. They also have a keg of black note in the wings, but that one might age better idk.
