Overall judgement on the latest batch: sweeter and more syrupy than previous years. I predicted that early due to the fact of maple syrup being added as opposed to simply aging in BLIS barrels. Still not a bad beer, in fact it's still a very good one. But it's not the CBS you had 5 years ago or more. Cheers.

Can’t speak to Dallas specifically unfortunately, but I’ve seen it in several locations in Austin, including grocery stores (Central Market). It’s been here for about 2 weeks.
Definitely agree that it’s a bit sweeter than I remembered but then again this is probably the “freshest” I’ve had it before. Still I do feel that the change of barrels has had a slightly negative impact on the overall flavor of the beer. Still good but agree, not quite the same.

I know my palate has changed a lot since my first taste of CBS; I bet the beer has changed a lot too.

My thoughts after grabbing a single bottle & trying it: syrup-y, mild and forgettable.

This was once my gold-standard beer, but now it's an afterthought. I think my palate has changed more than the beer. This is low-hanging fruit to get a good buzz without actually being a solid beer. Make a decent, thin base beer; add a little chocolate, add a little coffee, add a little maple, and your having a bit of candy that makes your relatives bearable. But it's not really beer, as Ninkasi, Silenus, Tenenet or Tepoztecatl intended.

    One idiot's opinion, anyway.

Excluding the Maple You meant to say KBS right?:poop:I've seen this on shelves, but i know better than to buy any Founder's things now . The label change , the drama , them not using BLiS barrels ( i mean, seriously, WHAT THE FUCK) and everything else makes it hard.

Even their release of the BBA Mothership Imperial Stout had vanilla in it :poop:

Unpopular Opinion : Go away Founders. You murdered your only saving grace. People waited almost 5 years for this crap:popcorn::popcorn:

I mean CBS. I think KBS is even worse these days, but back in the day I put CBS on a higher pedestal, so it seems more extreme how much my opinion has changed for CBS.

I was refering to the Thin base stout with added chocolate and coffee . CBS is pretty much KBS with maple right? or am i wrong. IDK

i do agree that all those beers are horrible now .

KBS tastes like cheap ass chocolate . I'll still take a 2019 CBS all day becuase it's still good .

I don't know how hard it might be to source BLiS Barrels now for Mahou San Miguel , but, sheesh , to completely throw all caution to the wind and use doodoo maple additive instead is an insult.

Maybe they are hoping to bamboooozle people that never had the OG, though . I can see that working.

The majority of beer consumers love garbage.

When this beer first became available, back in 2009, I remember making an hour and a half drive up to SEPA to try it. They had both KBS and it in tap, which I thought was really cool. Long story short, I thought the beer was outstanding... easily one of the best ba stouts I'd ever tasted.

Unfortunately, that's not how I feel about it today. Your description of the beer mirrors mine pretty closely, and I go back and forth as to the reason. Has the recipe changed or have I experienced some significant palate shift? Who knows. All I know is that it's not a beer I seek out anymore. The times we get a keg out this way, it's not unusual for it to take a month or two to blow (the beer I drove 90 minutes for back in 2009 blew in a couple hours). So it might not be just me (or you).

My two cents, the largest change is in market. CBS, KBS, etc. are still great beers in my opinion. Admittedly, I haven't seen this year's release yet, but will absolutely grab a 4 pack if/when I see it.

The recipe may have changed a bit(?) over time, but beer, as an agricultural product is never the exact same.

Like I said, my thinking is that the market has caught up. When beers like KBS, CBS, BCBS, etc. were first being released, there was very little / nothing else like it in my market place. Now barrel aged stouts are a dime a dozen. I don't think the beer is any less great than it originally was, I just think that it doesn't standout from the competition as it once did.

Part-and-parcel with the change in marketplace is changing palates. Someone mentioned the beer being thin.....is KBS/CBS thin, or is it just not as thick as these lactose/36 hour boil/low carbonation stouts that breweries are churning out these days?

^^Take this with a grain of salt. I love Founders.

Don't disagree, and in fact have posted as much in prior CBS threads. I think that's definitely a factor.

Even so, I think there's more to it than that. CBS really does seem thin and a bit lacking to my palate these days (the more recent editions), and that's not just in comparison to other BA stouts. It's still a pretty good beer, but I just don't feel it's the incredible ba stout I used to rave about

they also changed the recipe by replacing Maple Barrels with Maple Syrup as an Additive . It's pretty much the worst kinda stuff you could drink with all the additives thrown in ( mis tier chocolate and who knows what kinda maple syrup)

At least with CBS, they literally changed the recipe in a way that must materially change the beer. I haven't had the latest batch (and almost certainly won't) but it's definitely a different beer. Aging in 3rd use barrels that held bourbon and then maple syrup is a completely different process/addition than adding maple syrup

Did not know about the change.....May just pick up a bottle instead of 4 pack to test it out.

CBS is good, but better at the GR taproom. Also …. A little sweet for me. I prefer KBS, KBS Espresso and KBS Maple Mackinac Fudge. For pure Stout; Imperial Stout is just a damn good beer to sip.

In my travels this evening I saw a four pack of Founders Stay in Stout, 10.6%. Nothing on their site that I saw but the art was holiday themed and here's the description:

"Imperial Stout with chocolate, hazelnut flavored coffee, and fudge flavored coffee aged in oak bourbon barrels."

Odd that they have so many BA beers on the shelf at once and a few not mentioned on the site. It does sound delicious, though, and probably worth a go.

Was this Capone's? I was there for that when they opened that day.

    Craft Ale House.

CAH got a number of hard to find, sought after kegs, despite the fact they had only recently opened.

Someone on BA posted the info about the tapping, and I knew the keg wouldn't last long. So I took off early from work that day, and made the drive up to SEPA.
