Question for you guys....when you consider a "vintage" of a beer, do you go by when it was bottled or brewed? I see comments further back that when Founders was selling the vertical of FIS on Thursday, they ran out of 2012 pretty quick. I wasn't there that day, but was on Friday and bought some "2013" FIS. But the bottle date on it was the first week of January 2013. To me that is 2012 brew considering it's 2 years older than what I'm buying now, which I consider to be 2014. Nitpicky, but just curious.

I always just go by the date on the bottle.

With FIS "I" consider it by the release date. In order to hit the shelves for Jan 1 it has to be brewed before that. So anything brewed in December or January would be for the year January is in. Since except in rare cases where a shop gets it early, it isn't sold in December and can't really be counted.

And I was there and ya they ran out of "2012" within 15-20 mins or so (I have yet to talk to anyone who got a "2012" to verify bottle date). I was able to get the "2011" but that had a bottle date of 12/22/11. So yes it was brewed in 2011, but intended for distro 2012. My guess is that the "2012" they sold were actually brewed and bottled in January 2012, so different batch same vintage as the 2011.

I could be completely talking out my ass here, but that is just my armchair speculation.

OK, thanks. No biggie. But I could of swore I bought my first round of this season's FIS in December. If it was Jan, then yes it should be "2015" on the shelf now.

Yes it can and does happen that it gets out in December. Founders release calendar says it starts in January so that is what I go by when I calculate its vintage.

I was jogging on Wednesday when I decided to take a quick run by Founders. There was like 12 people in line and picked up some KBS bottles. As soon as people got wind, there were lines every morning. People waiting around without knowing what was going to be released.....

That being said, well done for Founders keeping everything on tap the whole week. I thought Sweet Repute XXX stole the show.

Let's not shame the "Aspirant," they're new. We were all in the position once of buying up everything we could and nubbing on trades.

That being said, there is definitely hoarder plague here in West Michigan. I've seen people buying up cases of BWB to age, buying up Mint Chocolate Stout from Odd Side to age, etc. Makes we want to get into Bourbon.

I wasn't accusing everyone in WMi of being a hoarder, I'm just saying I've seen some crazy things.

Common sense should tell you (him) that factoring in the price of shipping in a trade is ridiculous. Doesn't matter how new you are. And combined with the other statements, it paints a pretty damn good picture about how a person "respects" beer.

Kind of curious as to who would be and why one would be cellaring a 5.9abv seasonal release with average ratings

Isn't hoarding more of a universal issue right now and not tied specifically to West Michigan?

    "ok"

I don't know, the same people I see who post pictures of their cellar that has multiples of Strawberry Shortscake. There is a growing mentality that limited release means mediocre beers become white walez after two years of cellaring.

Probably, it's like seeing war on the front lines....Especially when people lose their mind over vintage FIS releases. That beer, while amazing, is so easy to find....I found a bottle of 2010 at a gas station last year.

I thought IIPA turned into b-wines after cellaring?

That's a common misconception. Hopslam turns into barley wine in exactly 4 days after bottling.
