Founders Cellar Raid 2015

Here's the post that @BoyDrinksWorld mentioned about Brew Dogs and Founders. They are brewing up on Higgins Lake right now.

"Our brewmaster Jeremy Kosmicki is at Higgins Lake brewing with the @brewdogs. Head to our taproom to taste the beer tomorrow evening around 6pm."

 

The one I referenced was actually a more vague post on Twitter - if they're brewing today, it definitely won't be the BA Cran! Excited to try this new brew.

 

Is this beer that sought after? I still have a bottle and had no idea.

 

Using my internet sleuthing skills, I noticed that the event picture posted here has KBS listed Wednesday while the picture posted on their website and Facebook no longer mentioned KBS being served on Wednesday. I am going out on a limb and guessing it is KBS

 

Any chance that the CBS and other special releases make it to Saturday? I know the release schedule says yes, but also has the asterisk the it's while supplies last. I just moved to within driving distance and have always wanted to go, so what better time? I plan being there when they open.

Also what else is cool to do in Grand Rapids?

 

Maybe a KBS variant? Don't the Brewdogs guys usually tweak the recipe a little for the beers they make on the show?

 

The beer they are releasing for the show is an Eisbock.

 

CBS will definitely be on Saturday if their previous releases of it are any indication. It flowed for over a week in December. The others will probably not last past their schedule date would be my guess.

There is lots to do in GR. I'd recommend Vivant and Perrin if you're keeping it beer-centric. GRAM, Meijer Gardens for some culture.

The food at Founders is very good IMO, but there are some great restaurants in GR as well. Donkey Taqueria, Harmony Brewing Company (pizza), and Curry Kitchen are some of my favorites.

 

I think the food at any of the GR breweries is good, but my notables are Brewery Vivant, Grand Rapids Brewing and HopCat in that order. And I'll agree with arthurry that the pizza at Harmony is very good, a bit better than their beers.

 

Although I'm only an amateur in regards to actual brewing processes, I'm confused about how they could be brewing the beer this week and it will already be ready to taste by tomorrow? Either way -- I'll be there and I'm excited to try it!

 

Vivant's food is stupid good. The place itself is awesome as well. You can't go wrong going there. I make it a point to stop every time I go.

 

So I'm new to the eisbock process, but from what I understand, an eisbock is partially frozen, and then the ice removed, which leaves the beer having less water, therefore higher alcohol content and potentially more flavor. I think they may have actually brewed the beer a few weeks ago and were just freezing it this week.

 

Founders food is very good but it is basically just sandwiches and some appetizers. Grand Rapids Brewing Co (GRBC), which is within walking distance has a more extensive menu and really good food. HopCat, also within walking distance, has a decent menu, killer fries, and a great beer selection. The Downtown Market is also in the same area and has a lot of different food options (sushi/seafood/Mexican/cheese/winebar) but is a little pricy.

 

From what Ive read, freeze distillation (aka fractional freezing) is not legal in the United States. Perhaps they will give the beer away for the show through some loophole.

 

I think the food at Founders is great (I actually have a lunch trip planned today) but as mentioned above it is mostly sandwiches. If you want other options, I would recommend a short drive to The Greenwell (across the street from Brewery Vivant), Electric Cheetah or even grabbing a burger at Stella's... Probably in that order. This might get it booed off the stage but I prefer the chronic fries at Stella's to the HopCat crack fries.
