I'm going to be in Grand Rapids on Monday for work and was wondering if anyone knows what's up with this beer? I can't find any information on it. Was hoping for something different to look forward too and hope this is something nice. Thanks!

It's maple bourbon barrel aged Red's Rye PA. Saw this a few days ago on Founders' Instagram feed.

I believe it will be pouring too at Founders Fest this Saturday. It's not confirmed, but highly rumored.

I was told it was a red ale aged in three different barrels, I cant remember what they were though. I know it was maple bourbon and rye whiskey(?), and have no idea of the other. There was no mention of reds rye, but very well could be. No matter what it is, it is tasty.

Any other talk of what they might be pouring?

I don't think this will actually be good/popular/rare unless they are able to confirm that they were CBS barrels used in the process. They need to learn a thing or two from GI.

1 - Yes, I am absolutely making a joke about the "GI Rare Barrel is the reason that KH is so special" theory.

2 - I only find sarcasm to be funny when it is actually humorous. Unfortunately for the BA Community, I think my sarcasm is hilarious and post it for all to see.

My only response to this is that Goose Island had King Henry at the Festival of Barrel Aged Beer in 2010 (before it was aged in the used Rare / PVW 23 barrels) and it wasn't anywhere near as good as the current version is. A few veteran BA / RB folks tried it that day, and almost all of us thought it was good but nothing great. Aging it in barrels that still held a decent amount of Bourbon County Rare (as was evidenced by the color difference between the two versions, wish I had a good picture I could upload) I believe made all the difference.

    But that's just my .02.

    Cheers!

I resent that statement! Make something for yourself, be an entrepeneur!

I really don't think there is a way to link to someone's photo on Instagram but the caption under the picture of it reads "Dave's Not Here is Red's Rye PA aged in maple syrup bourbon barrels." This is from Founders' official Instagram feed.

I certainly wasn't at the FoBAB, so your experience actually brings to light something that may not have been directly addressed in the past.

I'm curious as to how much beer was remaining in the spent barrels used in all versions. Also, did the first version use fresh bourbon barrels, BCBS barrels or new barrels? Was the recipe the same or did GI improve on their experiment at the FoBAB? I would think that the vast color difference would indicate that the first version didn't have the same amount of RIS blended into it, if any.

Good idea, I will sell drugs and kill old women for their cars.

I miss my friends and the great beer scene in Michigan, other than that, I could care less about Michigan.

So you are saying the original King Henry was just spent PvW barrels, not spent PvW barrels that had previously housed an RIS and still had some RIS residue remaining, correct?

If so, that seems like a huge difference to me, especially if there was a noticeable color difference between the two batches. It is essentially comparing a non-blended beer (assuming the same recipe otherwise) to a blended beer.
