I had a conversation with BeerBuyerBill when France44 had their cellar sale recently. I said I was thankful that stores were able to have cellar sales with rare beer and would have said the same about restaurants who had rare beer events. I also said that I thought there wasn't as good way top do it, any chosen method will leave people disappointed, but the most important thing was to pick a method and go with it for all your releases. All stores wont choose the same method and if we as consumers know that France44 does weekend releases, Lyndale does split releases, Firkins puts it out when they get it etc. then we know which ones to shoot for in the time we have available.

Maybe I'm naive because I'm a NOOB and wasn't looking for rare beer when it was more easily obtainable but demand is high and if you want to get rare beer it's going to be more difficult now. My opinion: be thankful that there is good beer to be had and be understanding of supply and demand when you miss out on something you really want. Stores will be able to sell it however they decide to do it thanks to demand and the fact that some even care at all about appeasing customers who are regulars or vocal critics says a lot about how much they care about the beer and customer satisfaction.

    Hey guys,
1st, I don't know the best way to do rare releases. We haven't decided on one way to do it yet. Just because we held KBS for the weekend, doesn't mean we are going to do that for Doom, or for every rare release. In the future we'll stick to one way, but again, we haven't decided on that yet. I like and am leaning towards Saturdays, others at the store don't like that idea. We're working on it. With SUPER limited releases like Doom, it's always going to be hard.

We haven't got Doom yet (hope we get it) and I don't know when we'll put it out to sell. We'll decide Wednesday when/if we get it.

They should hide some bottles in with the Boone's Farm, that'll really F-up people's world...(But then it would just go bad, nobody in their right mind shops that section anyways....)

I know we talked about this the other night, but the fact that you are taking time to consider a way to sell something slower than it would on its own, is way more than anyone of us should expect from a store. There is no way to make if fare for everyone, someone will always get shutout for one reason or another. If "we" as the beer community can't accept that even an effort by a retailer to even consider options to make it "fare" for everyone, is going beyond the retailer's responsibility to us, then find something else to dump your expendable income into.

As it is so often said, but never seems to sink in, it's just beer...

Doom isn't worth the drama and barely worth the $12.99 price.

Westend liquor in red wing had a pre order list for their kbs shipment for their VIP beer guys. Maybe it's hard to establish that personal of a connection in a larger metro liquor store, but this sounds like a better system to me, although picking a select few favorites requires unpopular choices too.

Hate, hate, hate this idea every time it comes up.

I know there are people who can spend time shooting the shit with the people at their local store, but I have a job, family, friends, & hobbies outside of beer. I don't have time to go in & kiss the ass of people who may or may not remember me when a Big White Shelf Poop comes out. If any of my favorite places ever started 'waiting lists' for popular beers, it would be the last time I ever set foot in the place.

Of course, there are a handful of people I will chat with at a couple stores, but it's because I like those people, not because I want to stick my nose into their anus.

Who says it had to based on personality. There must be a way to record volume of purchases. If I spend 1 or 2k on beer at my local beer store I would like to believe that I should get priority on limited releases vs some first time shopper that was willing to takeoff work and wait in line while you unpack the box.

    What is the bottle size?

Doom is in 22 oz. bottles.

There's been a lot of chatter about this over the years, & I should get back to work, so I'm not going to rehash them all here. But what you're proposing is a burden on both the retailer & the consumer with both positives & negatives for both. As a consumer, I just hate the idea!

Depending on the shop you frequent, i believe that some owners do set aside limited releases for their frequent customers. the main reason why i like supporting the smaller shops.

Assuming bottle limits as you mention (which I am assuming virtually everywhere is going to do) the utility is the same no matter when they release it).

As someone who works part time at a beer store, I think it is a bit much to expect them to not immediately put it out for sale. Ultimately that is the goal, to sell product and rare releases are more headache than they are "worth" so just get it out of the store and be done with it.
