All these people in this thread who don't like this beer before they actually drink it. LOL

Mad Fox Brewing did a fantastic beer a couple of years ago called Batch 100 which was an imperial black IPA aged in bourbon barrels. It essentially was a bourbon barrel stout since the hops faded pretty significantly with the time in the barrels. I'm hoping this one meets a similar fate.

If it's anything like that, I eagerly await this new experiment from Founder's. Thank for the comparison beer!

Sorry that I have an opinion, @Billydoughnuts ..... I love Founders stuff, I just feel they could go a different direction with the use of the barrels. No need to name call.

That's how you know it's a Founder Backstage (probably) thread.

I opened one of my bottles of Dark Horse's Maple Bourbon Black Bier tonight, which is stylistically similar to this one ("black IPA" aged in maple syrup whiskey barrels). I liked it, but I thought the hops overpowered the barrel and maple a little bit--but it was certainly good enough that I can see Project Pam having a lot of potential.

My plan is to sit on the Dark Horse beers for a little while. I have a feeling they will be more to my taste in 6 mos. or so.

Syrup Del Noche didn't suck. This probably won't either.

They have released CBS--just in keg form only. Maybe they don't want to deal with the clusterfuck that was the last CBS bottle release. Those barrels are far more limited than regular bourbon barrels, so any further bottle release would result in a huge backlash (again) about why they didn't release more or allocate more to certain markets even if the numbers were identical to previous Backstage series. And maybe--just maybe--they are people who like to brew new things and push boundaries and expectations rather than endlessly churning out the same beer over-and-over trying to satiate the insatiable.

Even if it was CBS, people would still be complaining. The distro wasn't wide enough, it wasn't as good as the original bottle release, etc, etc. Founders has to be one of the breweries given the least amount of slack by people on this site.

Or at least a malt forward beer. not sure I see maple flavor jiving with a strong hop presence.

Not necessarily. Most Black IPA's only have a small about of de-bittered dark malt (like Carafa Special) to give the coloring.
They don't have the same malt complexity as a porter or stout.

That's the part I'm really looking forward to. I haven't seen that combination before. It should be interesting.

actually, it sounds like you don't "get it" (i like them both) but instead get extremely insecure and overly sensitive if someone is even remotely critical of your favorite breweries. respectfully, i'll keep posting. but thanks!

I'm right there with you on CBS, but craft is about experimentation trying something new. I'd imagine the hops would fade from the barrel aging, and the mouthfeel will probably be thin compared to a stout, but it'll certainly be an interesting beer to try.

It's probably CBS, and they are just calling it PAM so all the complaining assholes won't buy any. As for myself, I LOVED Doom and will buy the shit outta this beer. So pumped.

I remember all the whining about ReDANKulous... Which was delicious... And which is selling quite well here.

This also looks interesting (the point of Backstage Series), and I trust Founder's to not put out a product that was not well thought out in this series. May not be to everyone's taste, but I have learned to trust this company with quality.

How incredibly hip do you have to be in order to criticize a beer before even tasting it? Truly something I shall never strive to achieve.

    It was.

    It was not.

However this puts backstage back on track imo. Neverbefore done beer using a different style and not standard barrels = Backstage Homerun IMO.
