It's a shelf turd because the desired flavor fades rather quickly - most people who know better only buy it fresh, and I'm sure people buying old bottles aren't impressed and don't come back for more. A limited release means that people will get this fresh and it will be enjoyed as it was meant to be.

I just wish it had a better price point for a beer that's not a lot better than the shelf beers they make. :slight_frown:

Agreed. There's nothing special about this beer. It's decent for $10/6 pack but not at $10+/4 pack. I won't be buying any.

Yep same for Bigfoot but at least they lowered the price a little when they switched to 4 packs.

I had this beer on draft once and it was really good but after the whole Breakfast Stout thing then this, it's starting to get annoying.

I can't pretend to summons up enthusiasm for a seasonal that was once year round and 50% cheaper.

    Goodbye Red

I will be getting some Red Rye for sure. One of my favorite Founder's beers.

Distributor probably f--king up and marking it as old curmudgeon or something.

yeah. It's $13.49 over in St. Petersburg. I paid $4 for one bottle just so I could try it. It was good, but not worth that price again.

I guess I don't drink enough beer for an $0.84 increase in the price of a beer to be enough for me to swear off buying it in the future. Especially if it's a beer I like.

(note: I'm calculating the increase from the brewer's suggested retail price, not some of the absurd prices points that are being mentioned here based on retailer markups)

No, this is Founders' actual game plan. More complaints about out-of-date Red's than any other from what I read, and by making it a seasonal release buyers will be more likely to get it fresh even though they will not be able to get it all the time. This is a responsible move by Founders, and one that is in direct response to our complaints. They try to remedy a problem and still get crapped on. Apparently there is no perfect world.
The 6-pack/4-pack fiasco between Red's and FBS is not a responsible move however.

It's just 'Curmudgeon'. That's the name. 'Old' is the style. And they share a SKU so there isn't really a mix up.

Same SKU as all the other 'Imperial' series, so it's the same price as they all are. We had it at $9.99 a 6pk, now with the same markup the 4pks are $11.59. $1.60 more for 24ozs less. That's some serious BS on Founder's part. We ordered two cases not knowing the price change and the distributor won't take the second one back. It's going to sit a LONG time.

SKU matches Curmudgeon, Imperial Stout, Double Trouble, and Rubaeus.

Agreed. I bought more Red's Rye than any other beer in 2012 and will be buying none this year (bottles). I will however still be drinking it on tap, where it remains year round, and a much better deal to boot.

I know they share a SKU...That was my entire point. And yes it is a mix-up when a retailer or distributor just assumes the new seasonal costs the same as the old seasonal instead of checking the invoice (or the price doesn't get changed in either parties system for whatever reason).

And perhaps they all share the same case price but just because they share a SKU doesn't mean that has to be true.

Hell I had to re check this thread, I saw this at Meijer today and it was almost 12 bucks a 4 pack and I thought that doesn't seem right, but I guess that's where its at now......sucks....

This is BS. I mean I was okay with the FBS going from being announced as 6 packs back to 4 packs because I thought there would still be reasonably priced Red's Rye in 6 packs. Instead they keep FBS 4 packs, change Red's Rye to 4 packs, AND mark up Red's Rye? But don't worry, we get All Day IPA cans in 12 packs at nearly $20 for <5% abv beer coming out when summer is almost over. Founders lately has been a joke, even with their Backstage Series.

I know if they are charging 11-12 bucks for 4 Red's Rye, I'd much rather pay that for the more potent Hebrew RIPA (which turned me on to ryes in the first place)

Yup and now all the distributors will sell the year old first at the new more expensive price and the new fresh batch will end up being old as all the old stock sells first to unknowing folks being told its a seasonal it's fresh.

I bought double trouble once not knowing it was a seasonal and it was old. Not horrible but not what I paid $60 for. I have since learned DT is a year round beer in PA and most Founders is old.

I stopped buying their beer after buying a fresh packed on date mix case and finding pretty old beer in it and getting no replies to my emails.

Founders does not give a shit once they sell the beer so I no longer care for Founders.

    Enjoy

Perfect world?? They are getting crapped on (deservedly so) because of the ridiculous price increase, not because they made it a seasonal to try to keep it fresh for people.
