I've had both, and Sumatra Mountain Brown is not at all similar to FBS.

Sumatra Mountain Brown is a very good beer, but I was really hopeful that the Barrel Aged Honey Porter would be next in line. It was outstanding and it deserves to be bottled.

Enjoyed a pint of this at the KBS release day last month. I bit over the top on the coffee, or so I thought at the time, but overall a really good beer. Looking forward to picking some up once it hits stores around here.

Agreed... excellent balance between the coffee and the base beer. Hell, nicely balanced overall, and I'd never pick it out as being such a big beer, hides its booze well. Will definitely pick up more.

I thought the mouthfeel was on par with the medium-full body. Not thin at all.

I had low expectations for this. Being a brown, I expected a very thin mouthfeel, and being Sumatran coffee, I expected some funk. This is neither thin, nor funky. It is surprisingly pleasant, and hides the 9% quite well. I did not mind pounding down this 4 pack whatsoever. It was much more enjoyable than the Terrapin SO series.

Not surprisingly, I think it's very good. For a brown ale, I think the mouthfeel is appropriate and the taste is outstanding. The 9% ABV works. It's a substantial beer but not an overwhelming one.

Excellent brown ale, the Sumatra coffee taste is incredible....just when i was starting to get disillusioned with Founders releasing a different type of ipa every other week they drag me back in!About time!

Founders did really well with creating Sumatra Brown. The depth of flavor with the coffee is outstanding. Also, the sweetness at the end from the Imperial Brown Ale really is tasty.

I disagree here. To say that Sumatra Mountain Brown is "not at all similar" to Breakfast Stout is a pretty big exaggeration. To me, a German Pilsner or West Coast IPA is "not at all similar" to Breakfast Stout. While the malt bill is completely different, both SMB and FBS have the same general coffee taste (at least to me), and also use the same coffee (Sumatra).

I dunno though, maybe this is all semantics.

I actually preferred it to Breakfast Stout. FBS to my taste always has a bit of char to it. The brown ale is much smoother to me.

Man, the coffee in this beer is so good. Hard to decide if I like this or BS more.

Talk about hunting......I'm driving down to Portland from Seattle to meet up with fellow Kansas Citian @jones7981 for an In-person trade. Giving up some Fremont Abominable Ale, Holy Mountain Tower of Babel, Abyss Rye & Cognac for six bottles of Founders Sumatra Brown, Backwoods Bastard, and some other valuable choices. Can't wait to try this stuff!

BTW, it's a flippin shame the Pacific Northwest still isnt receiving Founders distribution. But wait........according to many around here, Founders isn't worthy and would end up being a shelf turd (sarcasm meter is really high).

Sumatra Mountain Brown is an excellent beer. Much better than their Breakfast Stout.

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's better than FBS, but really enjoyed this one. Founder's seems to be occupying half my fridge at the moment.

Cracked a bottle of this Saturday and was pretty pleased. The coffee was a bit overpowering - I'm a coffee lover/addict/fiend, so no aversion to coffee here - and a little one-note, but still a really nice imperial brown that drank much easier than the ABV might have you believe. Not sure I'd want more than one in any given session, but quality stuff.
