I'm going to be in Fredericksburg VA for a few days and I'm looking for local brewery recommendations. I probably won't be able to get away to DC or Richmond, so I'm going to have to find something in or right around Fredericksburg. Any suggestions?

I have not been personally but have heard very good things about Highmark, Red Dragon and 6 Bears and a Goat. I have been to Adventure Brewing, Spencer Devon and Maltese. Was not overly impressed with Maltese but the other two were solid. Spencer Devon is also a full service restaurant and I enjoyed the food there.

If it may not be before next weekend when you go, Strangeways is holding their Grand Opening weekend the 23rd-25th. They are a brewery out of Richmond opening a satellite location in FXBG.

Damn, I'll just miss that Strangeways opening on my way back from Virginia Beach. I've liked their beers and that should be fun. I am planning to stop in to their original location though, probably on the way down. I'll look into your suggestions TomCat11, thanks for the info.

I would not be surprised if they were having a silent soft opening next week leading up to the official opening to work some final tweaks and kinks out. Most of the new breweries around me do that at least. Maybe ask about it when you stop by RVA or just swing by on your way through to see.

I would agree with this. I finally made the trip to F'Burg a couple months ago and was really impressed with Strangeways. I am use to the one in RVA where they promote having something like 40 beers on tap but many of those are the same beer with just syrups added to it when poured. I don't recall how many taps there were at the FXBG location but it was a lot and they were truly different beers. Was glad I included them on my stop!

The one that truly blew me away however was Red Dragon. Their IPAs/DIPAs/TIPAs and Gose offerings were some of the best I have had from VA. The weekend I went they had just released Strawberry & Creme DIPA and it was out of this world good. Double Sideways DIPA and 3 Sheets TIPA were also exceptional.

I was not all that impressed with Highmark but to their credit they did have some big event a couple days before we went and a lot of their beers were not available so I did not get a true reading from them since their more popular ones has probably kicked during that event.

6 Bears & A Goat was a cool spot that served food so we ate lunch there. Beers are probably middle of the road for me but the food was quite good.
