I apologise in advance as this is not a post about good beer: Sometimes when Im drinking slop, I crash cool it in the freezer. Sometimes i er "forget" about it. Wake up in the morning and find it frozen solid. Kinda fascinated as to what people think it actually does to it. Can't be good surely. The alcohol won't freeze, what will the CO2 do?
I don't know the physics/chemistry behind it but it will certainly kill the carbonation. Don't know what happens to the CO2. You've motivated me to go and edumacate myself about it.
from memory it goes like this. liquid will increase its ability to absorb gas as its temp drops but at the point of freezing the gas comes out of solution. the bottle cap will normally flex a little at this point and vent the gas. also if you have any live yeast in there there their cell walls burst adding off flavours. but dont quote me on it
Per Barls, but usually not that subtle. Usually blows the cap and makes a god awful mess. One of my ticks is I subconsciously know when 45 minutes is up - whichis usually long enough to make it cold. This one time at band camp we forget about a case of Tooheys old in a deep freeze, combine it with my mother and 10 piss tank mates ... not a happy situation
