    Hello all,
Any tips on breweries, beer bars, etc. to visit in Freiburg? Want to try the local offerings, among locals where possible.
    Cheers.

Freiburg im Breisgau? Yeah, you won't find a lot of tourists there, well not Americans anyway. It's not one of the tiny towns, but it doesn't have any real tourist destinations like München - and even in München you're pretty much sitting with locals. Freiburg is kind of out of the way, and it's in the south which is less populated.

Unfortunately I have no recommendations for places to get a beer. Check the directory and try them all - it's still a fairly small town and you can walk from one side to the other in about 45 minutes. Pick a place you like and go back a few times. Have fun!

The directory listed spots that didn't come up in my Google searches, good suggestion! Thanks.

Depending on the time of year you might bump into U of Michigan students, the Uni has a program with them. It seems that a lot of people I know spent time in Freiburg.

No idea if you've already made the trip, but the local large brewery is Ganter -- which brews a broad range of decent, drinkable beers (if nothing to write home about). The old Feierling brewery closed some decades ago, but was resurrected in the form of a brewpub across the street from the original Biergarten. The Biergarten is a very nice place to sit and have a few liters -- though the beer can be a bit variable.

For what it's worth, I had something of a beer epiphany at the Biergarten. We were wandering around town and stopped in for a quick beer, without any particular expectations. Halfway through the glass I realized I was drinking the best lager I had ever had. Absolutely clean and fresh tasting, I felt like I was sitting in a sunny field of grain.

Every lager since coming back to the US has been a huge disappointment. And no other beer on that trip came close (granted, we were mostly in Switzerland).
