So after much anticipation I brought a 2011 Bourbon Barrel Abominable (B-Bomb) to a bottle share/ tasting.

To my (our) disappointment, we barely tasted any bourbon what so ever. Did I get a bad bottle? After reading the reviews, ratings, scores I was really anticipating a fantastic bourbon forward beer. Shit, it is referred to as b-bomb right?

What we drank was a good beer, but barely any bourbon barrel characters. It was a big let down for me, especially when I consider what I traded for it. Did i get an off bottle? Or we're my expectations overly inflated?

Dang! Maybe I should open my bottle tonight and see what it's like.

I'm curious about this one. Would love to hear input from those who've tried it.

I never felt B-Bomb was that bourbon forward to start with. I thought the barrel was really really well integrated fresh and gave a nice accent to the base beer.

So it should be BB- Bomb? Barely Bourbon? Your post makes me think my expectations were out of line... Maybe?

Anyone else? Was I too focused on the nickname "B-Bomb"? Cuz it definitely was not a bourbon bomb....

B-bomb is short for Bourbon Abombinal and it was a blend of 2010 and 2011. IMO it was a beer that was ready to be drank fresh. Right when they released it.

Good news is in a couple months you can try a 2012 fresh.

Hmm, as opposed to Matt, I thought Bbomb was pretty bourbon forward fresh but mellowed out nicely after a few months. I haven't had one recently, but hopefully you just had an off bottle and the bourbon's not absolutely gone.

I had it fresh off the tap and I remember it being one of the most bourbon forward beers I had had at that point. I couldn't imagine the bourbon quality would deteriorate that quickly.

I was not trying to start a controversy , but this brew came with some high expectations so it was a little disappointing. Maybe it was an off bottle or maybe I need to try a fresh one. If someone gave me this blind, I wouldn't hav guessed I had a barrel treatment...

I will have to be on the lookout for one soon when released in the ISO forum...

I agree it's not particularly bourbon-forward, and that's what I like most about it. The bourbon is used as an enhancement, not the main event.

If I want straight-up bourbon flavor, I'll just drink bourbon. If I want a beer with a bourbon twist, I'll drink B-Bomb.

I like to taste the bourbon in my BA beers and prefer to drink them fresh. As they age those flavors will subdue and blend more with the base beer. Sometimes this can be an enhancement, but there certainly is a sweet spot for flavor balance.

I agree with libbey on this one. Fremont already did such an excellent job blending this beer, the bourbon was perfectly balanced and integrated right out of the gate. That barrel is just drifting away with time.

I had the opposite experience. I thought the bourbon was well-integrated and balanced fresh --- I had a number of them on tap as well as from the bottle. However, I found the bourbon aroma and flavor was more enhanced as it aged --- I finished my last two bottles a few months.

But with that said, I've had a number of bourbon barrel-aged beers that are a lot more bourbon forward than B-bomb or even Kentucky Dark Star.

I would liked this post 100 times if I could have. Too many bourbon barrel beers have the booze dominating the beer. I want beer damnit! I know where my bourbon is.

It has been several months since I had B-bomb from the bottle, but I remember it still having an obvious but well- integrated barrel character. I had it on tap at Fremont this week and it was excellent, still the great yet bourbon barrel presence without being too boozy or harsh.

Drank one last night and I will have to agree with draheim & kevwcamp, well integrated and delicious. Bourbon was there, but not to the point where I felt like I was drinking straight bourbon. I am VERY happy I have another bottle of this beer in the cellar.

If you guys keep disagreeing I am gonna be forced to open a 2010 B-Bomb and settle this once and for all.

You don't drink the walz Josh. You hoard them in a dark dark corner of the cellar.
