French Press help

    Coarse ground coffee right into the french press - maybe 2 tablespoons? I just let is steep in 9oz of Expo in the fridge for maybe 25 minutes give or take, then plunge (not too hard, I might have broken that rule as well) and pour into your glass, then add the last 3 oz of beer to recarb.

    The depressing part was seeing how much beer was left salvageable in the grounds when I was done, but it probably appeared to be more than it really was.

    Out of curiousity, is there a secondary brew sitting in those grounds? Do you think if you added more coffee and ran straight water through it that you would get anything different out of it for perhaps an iced brew the next day. Just curious if there is a secondary effect of beer infusing coffee

    Interesting idea... I have no clue. It was really sloshin' around in there though. Plenty of beer.

    I think I am going to used iced coffee with mine. Just a tablespoon to start.....

    Just curious, haven't tried this yet, and I think it would be painful to see the dregs go down the sink. So @Hop-Droppen-Roll since this is your area of knowledge, what do you think of the AeroPress, just got my daughter one and was thinking about getting myself one, have you ever used it to infuse beer? Seems you get less grounds residue.

    I'm studying up on this thread after letting some family members know I'd like a french press for Christmas. So many great ideas on here.

    I mainly use a french press to doctor things like Bud Lite up with leaf hops when I get stuck with a few extra cans after visitors come over who don't drink craft beer. If you try the french press on coffee let it sit in the fridge for an hour or so or on a cold porch and then see what happens. I know with fresh spices they can often get astringent if they are not toasted or boiled first. I don't think you will have the same problem with coffee.

    I'll chime in with this:

    The best success I've had with running stouts (or whatever strikes fancy) through french presses with coffee is actually AFTER brewing coffee with the grounds.

    That is:

    Make coffee with French Press.
    Keep grounds in situ.
    GENTLY pour beer into French Press.
    Let steep ~3min.
    GENTLY press beer+grounds.
    GENTLY pour coffeed beer into glass.
    Add holdover beer for carbonation (if you like).
    Drink and enjoy.

    Stone IRS is great for this.
    If your Founders Breakfast Stout is old and losing coffee flavor? Yup.
    If you want to expand your dunkel? If you want to calm your barleywine?
    If you just want to find out what an IPA with ridiculously fresh coffee tastes like? Yup.

    I think (though I am NO scientist) that this is due to the difference in extraction btw alcohol & water. They are different liquids and pull different things, no? So, I love my coffee really really strong, but I find that if I do not use the grounds for coffee first that the beer pulls too much of the coffee flavors I don't actually want in the beer. Though I would be hard-pressed (ha) to accurately describe those flavors.

    Anyway. I always use light roast coffees when adding to beer. The dark roasts (Which I love as coffee) add less to the beer. Get that high-altitude chocolatey yet vegetal Mexican Altura Coatepec for example rather than that Black as Night Cuban Roast.

    I have 12 bottles left of Bourbon County Barley Wine 2015 (infected)
    What can i use with the French Press to make it a other nice beer again????
    I try cocos but cocos and barley wine don't tasted well

    not sure of the taste profile if it has gone more to the sour side, if it has wouldn't fruit/berries be the logical addition? You have 12 free bottles to play with (assuming you got a refund). I would forgo the press and play around with some berries. Go to grocery store and get a small bag of mixed fruit (frozen), separate the berries and let them thaw. Muddle the berries in separate glasses and add some BW on top of each one and muddle together. Find the one that you like or blend to determine if any of them work. Once you find what works you can get fresh berries and use on the remaining 11 bottles utilizing the french press. Sacrifice one for blending, finding what works
