Is there a big difference in deciding to buy a fridge vs a freezer as long as you have it plugged into a temperature control unit?

Looking at buying an upright and putting in my office but didn't know if there was a difference/advantage of one over the other?

not that i'm aware of, aside from the concern that if your temp control fails, your beer could freeze. it's a concern i have with mine, but my guess is that if the temp control does fail, it would most likely just cut power instead of staying constantly on.

If you have the A419 johnson controls temp controller and are using it with a freezer just set the "SF" to "0" and the freezer will be turned off if the senors fails.

The default setting for that controller is SF set to 1 which leaves the output energized.

I have heard that freezers might be slightly more energy efficient/better insulated, but can't confirm and if you are buying a new one, either is going to work just fine.

thanks for the tip. mine is the manual version, which probably doesn't have the failsafe. i'll have to look into it.

The best part about the freezer is that it's one unit. While most fridges have a freezer on top or bottom

Yeah I know that's why I put MOST.. Plus I paid $75 for a stand up freezer, while finding a single unit fridge would be costly

Yeah, that's what I'm running into right now...damn near impossible to find a stand alone fridge on CL or anywhere around me yet the freezers are a dime a dozen

It also seems that going with freezers, the shelves are a lot stronger/sturdier to hold the heavy frozen items.

fwiw, if you're getting a freezer, it looks like only the digital A419 has the failsafe on it. i'm swapping my temp controller out for one, just to be safe.
