If you can convince, or are lucky enough to have, a friend / wife / roommate, to make occasional beer runs for you with a general idea of your preferences I highly reccommend it. Many selections have appeared in my fridge by this route that I simply would not have been likely to grab otherwise but afterward was grateful to have experienced. I liken it to internet radio. My bf and I buy our own individual beers, but we split any special releases/bombers. 99% of the time, we both like it!
In my profession, we tend to travel a lot. I frequently ask my co-workers to keep an eye out for certain beers based on where they are traveling to. A guy I work with was in Austin last weekend, and on my recommendation, he went to Jester King. He also was happy to bring me back a bottle of La Vie en Rose when I asked him if he could.
