At this point IPA is just a marketing term.

Did you try Watermelon Dorado, or just saying artificial watermelon would be artificial?

I haven't tried it, I've heard not awesome things, so I've avoided it.

I have never tasted Watermelon Dorado so I have personal tasting information here but that beer was not brewed using artificial watermelon flavors as indicated on the label: "Natural Flavors".

    Cheers!

The only styles of beer I love fruit in are wheat beers and Berliner Weisse.

The watermelon reference was just used as a for instance, nothing intended.

My toe is barely in the water here because fruit flavored beers have simply not been registering on my interest scale. Oh I tried the Krieks and that sort of thing years ago and that was that. Today there're so many variations on the theme I'm thinking maybe I should tune up my palate.

I've actually had it just recently! My sister came back from the Rehoboth brewpub about a week ago with a couple sixers of it. It's not amazing, but there is a noticeable amount of hops on the nose and a tad in the flavor. Overall it's worth picking up once. Wouldn't really go back for a second round though.

Thanks for posting the sip clip. Kudos to Sam for staying true. Funny how so many people (many on these boards) maligned Dogfish for all of their "quirky" beers. I do think they have stayed close to their roots and was surprised to hear that Aprihop was that old. Although "fruited IPAs" are not my preference, I really did enjoy Hellhound in the past and just don't see it that often now. I also think Sam hit on something in his differentiating his brews from those with "natural flavors added." I have not had this newest offering but have found things such as Aprihop, Hellhound, and Punk to be more subtle than most.

Grapefruit Sculpin is my only exception to this rule. Most of these extra fruity beers taste more like juice than beer. That's what people mean when they say they "want be that tastes like beer."

It's a business that you have no control over other than your wallet. Things come and go. It's life. There are still many options of great beers available. Enjoy this golden age of brewing.

Sam and his crew may produce brews that are, I suppose, superficially quirky, but their Biere de Provence Saison had me almost in tears at how much I loved it! The more herbs the better!! Screw the fruit, people should entertain the harder-to-achieve herbal elements in an IPA.

I got to try a fresh bottle of DFH Flesh & Blood last night, definitely a winner for me.

Adjuncts in general aren't necessary. Stouts can be great without coffee, chocolate, or bourbon barrel aging. But why not if different ingredients offer new flavor expressions? It depends on what kind of drinking experience you're after. Aside from actual flavor, choice of ingredients may also have intellectual value.
