Has anyone had one of these "milkshake" IPA's they thought were any good? There were several on offer during OBF this year, and I wasn't a fan of any of them (pfriem's version was the best I tried during OBF, and I guess I would call it "OK"). I know Tired Hands has gotten a lot of positive reviews of their versions, but so far I've yet to try one that I thought was really great.

I had this beer over Christmas and wasn't impressed. Seemed really thin and overly sweet. However, I liked Great Notion's Guava Mochi and Alvarado Street's Guav in the Water's Fine but I think the common element there was guava more than the "milkshake" style, as I tend to not like the addition of lactose in IPAs.

most of them are pretty nasty to me. Even the GN versions were just WAAAAY too sweet. veering into Bud Lime-a-rita territory. But again, im all for experimenting so have at it. infinite beer options available these days

I hope breweries keep labeling these milkshake IPAs clearly. Makes it easy to pass on them right away. Otherwise, I'm left trying to figure out if I'm passing on a $6/pint can of IPA because it's a hazy IPA or because it's a milkshake IPA

$6 for a pint can is almost a deal these days (for some breweries). I was at Beer O'clock on Monday, where they had Moonraker's Atomic Betty on tap for $6 an 8 ounce pour. Tasty beer and a cute name, but the price point was ridiculous.

Moonraker is quickly climbing up my list of overhyped breweries that charge far too much for beers that aren't nearly good enough to justify the price. Fortunately of course, we don't have any breweries like that here in PDX. :sunglasses:

This is the most we've talked about Full Sail in years.

The wife and I tried Moonraker Aloft, a non-hazy IPA, and thought it was tasty.

Not as tasty as cheaper local options, but we didn't regret trying it.

As for Full Sail, one of the beers from their new "Atomizer" series was the beer of the month at one of our haunts, but I wasn't inspired to try it. For one thing "ultrasonic infused" sounds gimmicky as hell. For another, they had Breakside IPA and pFriem Oatmeal Stout on tap.

Hm. I probably should have tried it anyway, for science.

But putting a date in the thread title will assure we have to talk about them again at least once in 2020.

I got a can of Aloft over at John's for a paltry $5, which I used to help wash down some delicious nachos my wife prepared for the Rose Bowl. Just not my cup of tea I guess (the Aloft - the nachos were outstanding). It wasn't terrible, but considering the hype and accolades Moonraker gets down in California, it was another head scratcher for me. I'm still waiting to try a beer from these guys that will have me exclaiming "wow, this is really great. I can totally see what all the fuss is about now."

I've enjoyed a number of Moonraker and Alvarado St beers, but I agree, they are, to my palate, overpriced for what they offer. I still will grab a can on occasion, but no way I'm paying $6/8oz. That's Abyss/B-bomb territory.

I must have my head in the sand these days. Or perhaps in a raincloud. I didn't know Moonraker was supposed to be worth making a fuss about. Ah well.

Oh yes... They have their own dedicated thread and everything down in the pacific forum.

That being said, I agree with you. They do not appear to be worth making a fuss over.

I didn't mind it..wasn't that much of a "milkshake" IPA..compared to say the stuff Riverbend was putting out..having said that Full Sail.for me is way down the list and f must buy beer.
Since the investment company took over it's been terrible ..no more interesting beers..just Session stuff gone wild
What happened to the BA Porter's and stout..even Wassail is not in wide release.

Thing is i was hopeful that it wasnt In Bev or Miller/Coors that wasnt taking them over..i guess i was totally wrong either of those two behemoths i feel would have continued the rarer better beers.

I wouldn't pay that either. I like some beers from both breweries, but not at that price. That said the more recent stuff from Moonraker has been puzzling. Not sure if its the new brewhouse/facility, palate shift, ingredient variability, or some combination of all... But I'm not in any hurry to find their stuff right now.

At least, in the FS case, they were employee owned (I have no idea to what percentage), and the "47" agreed to the sale.

FS used to have a bock that was pretty good. I miss it. Bock is hard to find in this part of the country.

Rogue Dead Guy is “an ale inspired by German Maibock.” Chuckanut Bock is pretty tasty if you can find it. I haven’t really seen it this year, but I also enjoy Bayern Doppelbock. They make a Maibock, too.
