I was in the Florida Keys last week and a restaurant in Marathon had a menu that said ask us about our craft beer selection. When the waiter came I asked him what they had as far as Florida beer. He rattled off a couple of things then said "Oh and we have some stuff in cans from some tobacco city brewery up in Tampa". Not quite Cigar City but he was close.

We develop our own localities and English dialect over many things. It is what makes this country unique.

We aren't going to pronounce things correctly and words also evolve. I always love the fact that the common French names in Maine are all TOTALLY pronounced incorrectly

If you come to DC and want some DC Braaaa! You are in luck

If you come here saying goes you want some DC brooy .. or go into a bar and want a mahrt'Sen nobody is going to know what you are talking about.

Oud Bruin. How is this pronounced? I've always said "ood brune". I'm certain thats wrong. I heard a podcast say it as "odd brew-in". Is that correct?

Semi-related: What do y'all think about bartender etiquette related to gross mispronunciations? I hear people order "Goes" at local beer bars all the time and never hear the bartender say it back to them correctly. I guess they are just trying to be polite, but if I didn't know I sure would appreciate learning the correct way.

I guess it seems like the staff are trying to avoid a potentially uncomfortable situation, but if they handled it delicately it seems like it could come off pretty smooth and help customers learn something... Thoughts?

Try saying Gueuze. Its a word the Dutch and Flemish use to distinguish native from non-native speakers.

I'd like a correction. I'd imagine most wouldn't. Depending on what the word is I'll decide how I will go forward saying it anyways. I'd still like to know.

Heh, I butcher beer & liquor pronunciation on a daily basis. I once walked into a liquor store looking for some "beaujolais nouveau" and asked if they had any of that "beaujaleau". My fiance still gives me a hard time about that one.

One of my favorite breweries and, like you, I've scratched my head trying to figure the pronunciation with no clue what so ever.

Anyway, just did a quick online search for the proper pronunciation and found this:

The French (Walloon) pronunciation is ood brune, so using that is fine. The Dutch (Flemish) pronunciation is owd (like loud without the L) brown. In Flemish ou and ui are both pronounced "ow" like when you hurt yourself.

I just read this whole thread and I'd like to comment on the whole Pliny thing...

Since no one can claim to know what Latin sounds like, who can say for sure?
