I think he means that Vinnie calls the beer "ply-knee" whereas the normal English pronunciation of the dude(s) is "plin-ee".

But if you order a "plin-ee" no one is going to bring you a roman (or the bones of a roman, or volcanic ash), so I think you're safe.

Right, I mean in his own time it was probably pronounced [plinius]. English-speaking historians and Latin teachers tend to say [plɪni], but I guess Vinnie says [plajni].

Mostly I'm just writing this to see if the IPA letter ɪ shows up right in the forum.

Vinnie can call the beer whatever he wants and pronounce it any way he wants. As long as he keeps making the best damn DIPA (Pliny) out there I dont care if he calls it "shit in a bottle".

This is all I have on this thread. An evangelical friend of mine found a man in a coffee shop, dressed in a suit, with a Bible open on the table. Trying to be funny, my friend asked if he had found anything interesting in that book. The man looked up and replied that he was to report to prison today, came to get a coffee and decided to buy a Bible to read to try to start making some sense out of his messed up life. He asked my friend if he would sit and explain some of God's word to him, starting with the first book , Guinness. That relationship has endured, but we still laugh about his pronunciation of Genesis.

The au is pronounced like the ou in house. and the ch is closer to the ch in Loch, it lacks the softer "s" sound.

What is the proper pronunciation of rochefort? I've heard it pronounced at least 3 different ways from people I assumed to be trust worthy..

I don't know if I'd trust this guy's pronunciation lessons given that he dedicates the review to Ronnie James "Dye-Oh"...

Pretty sure it's just 'double,' seeing as tripel is pronounced 'triple' (never heard someone say tripell :grinning:)

I don't understand why this kind of ignorance is so common. You don't have to be a beer guru or anything, but if you work in a restaurant that has a beer selection, you should take the extra second to read the tap handle and know what you're serving or at least be able to quickly provide a current paper beer list. It's no different than if someone were to ask a server what soup of the day is and they were to reply "wet".

Now, I see what you did there! Let me just tell you how hard it is to say Ø, but Peter of course says it the correct way as would anyone who is Swedish, Norwegian, Finnish, and possibly German. But oddly enough he has problems with an Italian oriented name. And also the same with Italians pronouncing Ø. We come close but the Nordic languages have more pronunciations then we Italians do.

Yes, you can trust Peter because he can speak with Swedish and Norwegians as they are similar. :grinning:
