REcieved a Nelson in a trade and it appears to have a piece of fungus attached to the inside of the bottle wall. The real question is...is this possible? If so, should I drink it, report it to the company(alpine), or drain it?
Believe it or not I'm not that stupid. This is no damn yeast, this is like black moldy fungus, about as wide as a pencil stuck on the side. Last time I checked yeast didn't stick/look like this.
Cool story bro!! Just a joke. But I will say that this is possible. Could be some sediment or something like that. I wouldn't be worried. Pour it, if it smells fine, I would say your are golden.
Personally I would open it and investigate. If it is another mold/fungus, you would probably know immediately and it would probably just be repulsive. If it smells like an amazingly delicious IPA, your good to go. If it is bad, contact Alpine and see what they have to say. Maybe Black Fungus Nelson is better than the regular version.
i too had a alpine nelson about 2 weeks ago that tasted horrible. It tasted like dirt-water with a funky fart taste. I BM'ed the awesome trader that sent it to me but we couldn't figure out the problem because it was a new bottle that he had just got from the brewery(no bottle dates though). Looks like I am not alone. He actually sent me 2 and the second one tasted fine. I had brought the first one to a tasting and after sharing it... people looked at me funny and then I tasted the beer and spit it out, even the local whino didn't want it. I spent the rest of the night defending Alpine Brewery trying to tell people that it was just a bad bottle and the beer was awesome since I had tasted it once before.
It just sucks because this would be the first alpine beer I've had, heard so many good things here about it....and then there is a tumor(in arnold's voice) on in my beer!
So I cracked it open...wow, the rye is pretty intense I say. Not really what I expected tbh. Pretty tasty, so i don't think that anything is wrong with it...not sure how this is rated higher than white rajah! But still, I don't want this huge chunk of black fungus in my beer bottles anymore.
