I personally am still trying to get a palte for these types of beers. hard to discribe anything but funk and sour from some of the Cantillions i recently had over the holidays.

My point being, that it is very commonly overused here, as I doubt the full 100% of people saying they have smelled horse blanket in a beer have actually smelled a horse blanket, or a turnout sheet or fly sheet for that matter.

Years ago, I drank a beer in Italy that smelled like rotten eggs...the beer wasn't bad, but I couldn't enjoy it much with that naseating smell....to this day, I don't know how you guys enjoy this funky stuff...reminds me of a couple of infected batches of homebrew that I had to dump

"Barnyard" gives a relatively good idea of a smell...I think of hay, animal sweat, wet hair, mustieness, wood...etc.

What did the funk smell like?...dirty socks, mold, wet hair, horse, cheese....

Typical smells that most would never imagine tasting or wanting to smell in something im going to drink. But I dont mind it so much, I do like some funk here and there.

Most of the "funky" beers I've had didn't taste that way. Usually they have a nice, lemony, tart taste to 'em with maybe some oak or other woodiness. That's what I find so interesting...the difference between the smell and taste.

OP, some of the Mikkeller "Spontan" series have a pretty distinct funky smell. I specifically remember Spontanmandarin smelling like a foot. Spontanpeach also had a pretty ripe smell to it, but not quite as extreme as Spontanmandarin.

The De Garde I'm referring to is the brewery De Garde in Tillamook, Oregon - not the style Bier De Garde. Though De Garde, the brewery, did make a sorta funky port wine barrel aged biere de garde once.

Most Biere de Garde's will not be funky in any way. More spice and yeasty. They're generally not wild / spontaneously fermented ... whereas everything De Garde the brewery does, is wild.

I think they're using this tool called "imagination". It's kinda like google, but in your head. ;-)

Wet dog and rotten veggies are definitely brewing flaws. There is good funky and bad funky. That's bad funky, IMO.

don't get me wrong i love the smell of back home, ill be the first to admit that there is something that takes over me and just makes me smile and want another whiff when i am driving back to Southern MO and smell the fields of cow shit, its not a rancid smell at all its very inviting in a sick way when you think about it, but i do love it and i love the smell for hay and cattle and horses. But when i think of a refreshing beer i don't think about those smells in my glass.
