No idea if we had an off bottle, or it was just 'as was intended' but we opened a Prairie Artisan Ales Prairie Ale and it was funky to say the least. My brother described it as rotten garbage which to an unrefined palette which he has could mean its a terrible beer or just a really funky beer.

Last year I had a Funkwerks saison on tap which was the funkiest beer I have had. It was unpleasant to be honest, since the carbonation was also low and the body was watery. Taste was sweet. Nasty.

As for good ones, these are the best saisons I know:

    1) Saison Bernice - Sante Adairius Rustic Ales - As good as beer gets. It's the sun: bright, funky, tart, slightly sweet... overall my desert island beer. They are my favorite brewery in the U.S, and maybe in the world.

    2) Anna - Hill Farmstead: A honey saison that is just gorgeously balanced. The honey brings a kind of delicate sweetness, almost flowery and medicinal, that is very subtle, which is matched by the dry hop and yeastiness of the beer. Lovely. They are also right up there with SARA.

    3) Love Buzz 2015 - Anchorage - This latest batch is something else. I found earlier batches of it a bit overrated, always prefering their Galaxy, Bitter Monk, or Rondy Brew (not to mention their maltier stuff). But this batch is even better than the last batch of Bitter Monk! Absolutely stellar... tanins from the pinot, lots of funk, full bodied. Balanced, lush, delightful. Rondy Brew is also fantastic btw.

    4) Americana - Prairie - VERY funky. Prairie is like the Stone of farmhouse ales in the US: blending aggressive American hop and malt profiles, forward brewing techniques, with belgian farmhouse styles. The result here is a funk bomb, super dank, hoppy, very dry, frothy, just delicious. It's also relatively well priced.

    5) Arctic Saison - Grassroots (Anchorage / Hill Farmstead): Haven't had their Brother Soigne (and le Sarrasin with Blaugies) which I hear is top tier, but this is my go-to saison when I can find it. It has become hard to find now, though, alas. It's got that HF house culture, which almost wheaty, but with the more forward profile Anchorage puts forth. Awesome combo.

    6) √225 Saison - BFM - Absolutely killer stuff. Oak, a winey character, dry, funky tart. Yet very balanced. It's one of my favorite saisons out there. Very belgian, though they are Swedish. Elegant, crisp. Brett and lacto forward, but well balanced.

    7) Snowball Saison - To Øl : One of my favorite breweries, and criminally underrated. This is another winner. Extremely bright, dry, funky, balanced. Crisp, and assertive, even though it's 8% it's exceptionally smooth. Quite funky as well, but in the best way possible. Lots of brett here.

    8) Fantome - Their classic saison remains their best. The problem is that it's very inconsistent: their beers vary greatly from batch to batch. Partly because they are bacterial fests. Mineral, coppery, hazy, almost grainy in texture, these are definitely on the funky end of things. Their seasonals I'm generally underwhelmed by.

    9) Flora Rustica - Upright: Wonderfully unique: has that floral bouquet. It's not as funky as the others, but it's a really delicious and elegant beer.

    10) Saison Premiere - De Garde: These guys should be on top of your list for sour-funky stuff. They are more sour than funky, and this is no exception. But hell they are exceptionally unique. Absolutely amazing stuff. Lacto forward, they always have a strong vinegar presence, very strong flavored. Delicious.

    11) Surette Reserva - Crooked Stave - One of the greatest breweries in the country. This is superlatively balanced, lots of oak, wonderful brett profile, and amazing carbonation. Anything you can get from these guys is pretty much liquid gold. Their year rounds are awesome too.

That's pretty much for my top picks. I still have to tried several top players, like Side Project's stuff (I tried some once but it's hard to remember), Anna, more HF and SARA... but those are pretty much some of my favorites. I could include Uncontrollable from HPB, and some others, but they are too esoteric. For easy to get stuff, the usual suspects are competent enough: Saizoen Bretta by Logsdon (not funky enough for me), Boulevard (too sweet)... you should try to get into the lambic turf if you like funk: Cuvee Renee Gueuze, Boon's Gueuze or Mariage Parfait, Timmerman's Oud Gueuze... those are the most common and are all really good (particularly the Mariage Parfait). If you see anything by 3 Fonteinen or Tilquin jump on it.
