Well, it finally happened to me on trade number 56. The dreaded shipping exception, listed as "unable to deliver". Box was supposed to be delivered on 4/20, which may become relevant and funny to you in a second.

I contacted Fedex on 4/23 to find out why it hadn't been delivered. They only stated that the "trailer had been involved in an incident" and that they'd get it delivered ASAP. I'm not a patient person, so when the package had the same status today, I called back. Same message, no more info, but this time I wasn't settling for "incident" and "ASAP". Two supervisors later, I finally got them to tell me that the trailer caught on fire (on 4/20, no less) and was a complete loss. Well, I guess my bottles weren't enough to help put out the fire...

So, of course I contacted my trade partner and am working to put together the bottles to send as a replacement box. I've initiated a claim with Fedex and a claims officer is supposed to contact me within 5-7 days.

I posted both for everyone's pleasure (add a fire to the list of ways that FedEx trucks have lost a trade box) and to ask for any advice you guys might offer to help smooth out the claims process...value of shipment, contents, etc., especially since I don't know if they'll actually be able to open the box and look in it or not.

As far as value goes, I've heard people use eBay prices because "the value is in the container and not the contents." So since you lost those bottles you can use the going "collectible bottle" rate. Either way, sorry about the box and hopefully it gets sorted out and you get reimbursed.

The value is what you declared it to be when you shipped it. Not sure that changes because it was burned up.

Unless he declared more than 100 dollars (and paid for the insurance), that's likely the most FedEx is willing to give him.

I managed to get slightly more than $100 from UPS the one time a box was lost. It didn't match up to what I paid in shipping, so maybe some sort of partial reimbursement.

Don't think it was damaged in a fire but I just had my first damaged box reported too. It looks like it's on its way back to my place tomorrow so we'll see what I have to replace.

One of the guys I trade with received the same story last year when checking on a package coming my way...truck caught fire and they were sorting it out. Funny enough, although my buddy sent another box, the first one showed up out of no where about 3 weeks later. Of course it meant I had to send another box his way, but I didn't mind at all.

Don't expect to hear back anytime soon. I filed my first ever claim with FedEx on April 11th and it's still "claim under review".

I declared the value on the shipping form at the min for no added Ins fee ($100), the box, I was told when I called that the box was "crushed on the delivery truck", I submitted the necessary paperwork and I've heard zero back since filing the claim.

That is a new one. Didn't some people lose boxes when a truck fell in a lake last year?

I remember hearing about that. The truck sank in the river or something.

Well if it got hot enough the bottles would have melted. I know what you guys may think, its glass its gotta get pretty dam hot. As a past boy scout whose gone on many camping trips, as hot enough fire will burn through a aluminum can and even glass bottles. So in that case, the caps may have been disintegrated, so you can say you sent him empty bottles.
