So when I was in college (1999-2003) at Syracuse, there was a bar we all used to go to which had Beers Around the World on Tuesdays. If you had all the beers, you got your name on the a plaque and a mug with your name on it. The beer we all saved for last was Three Floyds Alpha King (back when they sold in NY), because we couldn't stand it. We called it dirty sock beer. Fast forward 10, 11, 12 years later, and I would kill to get my hands on an Alpha King.

Interesting how taste buds change, I couldn't stand hoppy/bitter beers then. Now that's 90% of what I drink. Anyone else have a similar story about drastic taste bud changes?

I'm 26 and didn't really drink craft until 22 or so. I actively looked for "Top 250" beers but avoided anything Pale in style, I HATED hops. Now I could live off IPA's of any kind, I even have hop soap in the shower...

In my early days I thought SN Pale Ale was a hop bomb, now I consider it one of the most drinkable non-aggressive beers out there. Those early days had many a weekend with Pig's Eye cases ($7.99 for a case whilst being a poor college kid)

Alpha King is too dark to be an APA. FFF consistently brews beer beyond the parameters of the style because they are soooo effing rad!

AK is a good beer, though.

One of my first real stouts (not Guinness anyway) was Uinta Labyrinth. Its a phenomenal beer no doubt but when I first had it I almost poured it down the drain. A big heavy/boozy/coffee/chocolate/roasted mess haha
I love my stouts now though

I remember when drinking a Stone IRS for the first time I almost couldn't get through it. I felt like it was thick and loaded with flavor. Now it almost seems pedestrian after having BCBS, 120 minute, Parabola, etc. I kinda miss the "old" days when my palate wasn't as fatigued.

When I first got into craft beer I bought a case of Anchor OSA. It was probably '91 or '92 and it was so piney I didn't think I'd get through a bottle, but halfway through the case I loved it. Maybe the one time I was thankful for the screwy beer laws in PA. If I hadn't had to buy an entire case I might never have grown an appreciation for it.

I would say desensitized, or better yet, "jaded" would be a more apt description. But we all know dat feel bro. Kinda reminds me of when I was a kid and my mom used to try and describe the law of diminishing returns to me by saying "Well, if you went to Disneyland every day, would it still be special?"

Side note: if any scientifically inclined BAs feel the need to quantize the law of diminishing returns effects on the palate, I volunteer myself as a test subject. You can subsidize a BCBS per day diet, and I'll let you know if I still am enjoying em after a few years :sunglasses:

Agreed- but that's the beer that finally turned me on to hops. I had like 5 of them at a George Clinton concert and was hooked!

At midnight on my 21st birthday I pounded this gross beer that had been sitting in the back of my buddy's fridge since some party months before. It was horrendous, and became a joke amongst for a while after that. It was Brooklyn Black Chocolate.....and now it's a seasonal regular for us.

If you go by the bjcp it is not too dark to be an APA

Appearance: Pale golden to deep amber. Moderately large white to off-white head with good retention. Generally quite clear, although dry-hopped versions may be slightly hazy

Not that I really care about the bjcp - all I care about is what tastes good and Alpha King tastes damn good.

I'm glad you don't care because according to the BJCP, AK is not an APA.

Vital Statistics: OG: 1.045 – 1.060 (Ak is higher)
    IBUs: 30 – 45 (AK is higher)
    FG: 1.010 – 1.015 (AK is higher)
    SRM: 5 – 14 (AK is higher)
    ABV: 4.5 – 6.2% (AK is higher)
