What I want is a black IPA, but brewed with pale malts. So a light black IPA. An IPA.

Sorry. I really don't like black IPAs...

I loved Sierra Nevada's 30th Anniversary Jack & Ken's Ale - so Black Barleywine. They should make that beer a regular.

It originally meant not aged. Like the word "ship" it has referred to lots of different incarnations over the years.Originally pale and strong it's now generally dark and weak though by no means always.
One or two other points to pick up-the original IPAs would have been Brett infected and no true Scotch Ale (as opposed to the American misconception) would be seen dead with peated malt.

You're in California so I suppose this doesn't really help (especially since the beer is draft only for now) but DC Brau just made a Farmhouse IPA named Yonder Cities. The flavors mix very well together and is a very tasty beer.

I remember being absolutely blown away by the unique deliciousness of Stone's Vertical Epic '09 edition. It was a fusion of tripel style ale, with the juice of white wine grapes added to the secondary fermentation, as well as chamomile added to the whirlpool stage.

It was like the perfect fusion between beer and champagne.

More of this type would be great.

    See Belgian Quad...

A Belgian quad is dry with a low final gravity... a barley wine is sweet with a higher final gravity, and with caramel malt which is not a correct flavor to add to a Belgian Quad...
