I thought it took a solid 12 hours before tickets kicked. But I could be wrong.

Black Friday kicked in like 3 or 4 hours and the second run took about 12.

For $200 I am curious what "swag" you get? Rare Bottles? Or just a shirt and glass? lol For an extra $125, for extra time and a ticking chance, I just don't know.

Yeah, BADL is good, but the chance at drinking the BA Hunahpu keg dry...worth it! :grinning:

No because there's great food and it goes to charity.

Need the tax write off so debating it...but I got everything last year with not much of an issue...big lesson learned was to steer clear of Bruery Special Time pours

I am going to spend the $200 and just dump multiple pours of BADL on my head to keep cool. Kills two birds with one stone.

I seem to remember, for whatever reason, that it "sold out" around 8am. I do appreciate that this year there is a discount for pre-sale. I still wish it wasn't before Christmas but at least this year there is incentive to pony up the money six months early.

If he works in any sort of food/beverage related field, or even any field that deals with sales pertaining to beer or wine in any capacity and is an independent contractor, there shouldn't be a single issue with him writing off beer fest tix.

I'm in television and write off occasional beer fests / brewery visits as my partner and I have been pitching beer-related shows for a couple years now. It's "research".

you normally can't deduct tickets to charitable events where you get items of material value in return. A deduction with a "beer festival receipt" isn't going to be tough for an auditor to figure out. Hopefully they have their hands busy with real tax cheats.

That's... not true. You can't deduct the full price you paid, but you can certainly deduct the difference between the price you paid and the fair market value of what you received in return. $125 is the max you could deduct, possibly less although people on here seem to think that extra hour of drinking time is worthless. Regardless of the FMV of the extra hour of the swag bag, I have a hard time believing anyone will bat an eye if you deduct the difference between your charity ticket and a regular ticket (if you're an IRS auditor, feel free to chime in... law school was a long time ago and is not exactly full of practical, real-life examples).

Yeah but the receipts do not give a breakdown of the material goods value and I didn't think the customer/filer was able to assign a value/pull a value out of their ass. Auditors aren't exactly known for being reasonable and easy to work with heh heh

I know little about tax law (hence the reason for having a CPA), but I did forget that this fest has the money go towards charity.

But I have in the past written off fests like Dark Lord Day & the release of Pliny the Younger (travel/lodging/etc). The IRS can come and audit things like that all they want...I have the physical materials to prove that these events were related to my business & industry.

To be clear, my point was that FW says the majority of the proceeds from Early Admission tickets are being donated to charity. So all I was talking about was deducting the $200 Early Admission price less the $75 regular non-charity admission price, which is presumably the fair market value of the event. If an auditor wants to haggle with me over the FMV of the alleged "swag bag" I'll say that coasters and keychain bottle openers are de minimis and call it a day.

Without a lot more information, I absolutely would not try to deduct anything if I just bought the regular general admission ticket.

I'm confused, if you're in the industry you can't write this off as a work expense because it's charity?
