Alright, so only being 21 since last August, I could only grab 1 Sucaba in a trade from the most recent batch, and I got 1 Parabola at the store (stupid bottle limits).

To age or not to age? That is the question.

drink them both. they both taste great right now. Many people talk about abacus only declining with age, and while Im not so sure about it (only had a 1 year old abacus once and thought it was about on par with fresh sucaba), theres no reason to test it yourself. Parabola I find usually needs some time for the flavors to meld and the alcohol to mellow out, but this fresh batch seems very well put together and perfect for drinking now. I think this is the first year that I would recommend drinking fresh, and there is no reason to sit on it if you only have one. If you find a second bottle, by all means put it in the cellar, I know im stashing away a few.

Have you tried them before? If not, drink now - what's the point of aging if you have no basis for comparison? If yes, drink Sucaba and hold onto Parabola.

    They both taste great now.
They come out every year, so there is no need to hang onto to these IMO.

Thanks for this thread. I was wondering the same thing. Have a Sucaba in the cellar right now.

Drink them now, especially if you've never had them before. How else can you compare the aged flavors?

I listened to all the guys on here saying try it now if you have never had it, and man I am glad I did. Parabola was AMAZING fresh. Drink it if you haven't had it yet.

Parabola ages well, but is still much better fresh. I'm not a huge fan of Sucuba/Abacus, but it is much more palatable fresh. I had an Abacus a few months back and it was wretched.

I'd say age if at least one/all the following are true:

    1. You've tried it fresh
    2. You have batch 001 (rookie card!)
    3. You're doing a vertical
    4. Special occasion you have in mind to drink it

Drink em both if you havent had em. I have a case of each and will gladly set up a simple $4$ trade with you if you decide you want more in the future.

Just had an aged Abacus, and I thought it was better than the fresh Sucaba.

If you only have one the answer is always to drink it ASAP.

I wouldn't read too much into that. The previous batches of Abacus were better than this batch of Sucuba fresh, so it may not have had much, if anything, to do with the aging.

Fresh Parabola was much better than year old Batch 1 or 2...for me at least. I have liked Abacus fresh and aged but if you've never had it I'd just drink it fresh. The whole aging thing is really only if you have multiple bottles.

I prefer both of them fresh, especially Parabola. One of the best bbl-aged stouts, IMO.

I've only had Sucaba at the one year mark so it's hard to say but I agree if you only have one to go ahead and try it, at least you have a baseline for later aging. If you have extras by all means age away and try them at intervals.

I have never understood the 'Abacus/Sucaba goes downhill as soon as it's released' argument. Fresh (i.e. the first day it hit our market), it was fairly one-dimensional, with caramel/hint of toast and strong boozy notes. The one we forgot about in our cellar accidentally for a little over a year was phenomenal, second fiddle only to KH IMO. Rich, tons of depth, more defined flavors, etc....Parabola's alright either way, but Sucaba, I'd say hang on to.

I went through over a dozen bottles of b2 Parabola over the course of the last year+ and found that it went downhill with age. YMMV.

Personally, I preferred the 2011 when I blind tasted against a 2012 a couple weeks back.
I've got just over a case, and intend on holding onto half of them to age.
