To anybody living in the Denver area, I can use some advice for the GABF this year. This is my first time attending the GABF but am coming with people who have attended for 5-6 years now. I am looking for advice for places to hit and those to avoid when in the area. We are planning on flying in on wednesday morning and staying in Fort Collins that night. So I need advice on where to definitely hit, best places for food, and best places for bottle purchases. Then we are going to hit the first session on Thursday, spend Friday around Boulder/Denver, then hitting the Brewmasters session on saturday. What are the must go to places in Boulder/Denver when there? Unfortunately, I am only sending one 12 bottle shipper down with me so I am going to have be very selective when buying bottles.
Falling Rock Taphouse down in Denver is a must stop during that week. They always have a huge tap lineup and GABF week they always have tons of great special taps.
That week pretty much everywhere will be a madhouse, but I'd suggest hitting up the places that don't distribute outside of the area. In Ft. Collins that would be Funkwerks, Coopersmith's, Equinox, and Pateros Creek. By that time, Black Bottle brewing should be open, too. In terms of stores for grabbing bottles, in Ft. Collins I'm a fan of Wilbur's. It's a good/big store with a good mix of local selections and imports. In Denver, I'd suggest Dry Dock (Aurora), the Bull and Bush, Renegade, Strange, Denver Beer Co, Wynkoop, Copper Kettle, and Wit's End. Those are our "little guy" brewers and you're unlikely to see any of them distributing outside of the area except maybe the 'Koop. For stores, it depends on where you are at the time, but some of our best stores are Lukas, Davidson's, Tipsy's, Mile High W & S, Joy W &S, Argonaut, Total Beverage, and Chambers W &S. I think there are other people that know Boulder better than I do, but I'd probably try to hit up Upslope and Twisted Pine at the very least.
Boulder area I'd do Oskar Blues's Liquids and Solids> Solid food and very nice beer selection. Everything they have brewing at the moment and nice choices from other breweries too, both local and national. Was there the other day and they had an Abbey Style Ale of their on tap that was quite good.
If your in Boulder you should hit Avery Brewing. Also Backcountry Pizza & Tap house has a great selection. I was in there last Friday and just as I was about to leave he was tapping a new keg. A german Berliner weisse (I think he did that so I would have to stay for another and it worked).
My friends have hit most of the breweries and they always rave about Avery. Keep the information coming...
Backcountry is awesome; we had lunch there and spent about 4 hours working through their tap list before the Uncle Jacob's release at Avery. Food is great and lots of excellent beers, plus a very chill atmosphere.
Where's that copy/paste post from that other thread.... Ah here it is: http://beeradvocate.com/community/threads/2012-gabf.11171/#post-127872
