I’d be a little wary of those maybe?

2019 crop should be arriving in their hands soon. They haven’t had any 2018 for a while but all of a sudden they have more? Sounds like someone offloading a bunch that might not be that great? Could be totally wrong.

I'm not all that familiar with the hop industry but going by this picture I don't think the 2019 crop is anywhere close to being ready to harvest.

I am on Stan Hieronymus’ e-mail distribution list and below is something he sent a few days ago (with emphasis in bold by me):

    Australian harvest

Hop Products Australia, which grows 80% of the hops harvested in Australia and all the ones most in demand, reports production increased 13% in 2019 compared to 2018. That means 8.6% more Galaxy, 10.8% more Vic Secret, and 125% more Enigma (many plants of that variety are just coming to maturity). Those are all proprietary hops sold only by HPA.

A press release indicates the company will be able to honor all of its contractual obligations, but only a limited amount of hops will be available beyond that. Case in point: Galaxy. One of the questions the Brewers Association asks members each year in surveying hop usage is which varieties are hardest to get. Ten-point-four percent report shortfalls in Galaxy, 7.2% in Nelson Sauvin, 4.8% in Citra, 3.6% in Mosaic, and 2% in Amarillo.

Farmers harvested 822 metric tons of Galaxy this spring, which accounts for 55% of production. Growers in the American Northwest harvested 4,600 metric tons of Citra. In fact, Washington farmers alone produced more pounds of Amarillo, Apollo, Cascade, Centennial, Chinook, Citra (of course), Columbus/Tomahawk, Ekuanot, Mosaic, Pahto, Simcoe, Summit, and Zeus than Australian farmers did Galaxy.”

So, the 2019 Galaxy hop crop has been harvested (e.g., 822 metric tons worth) but there will be a limited supply to those who do not have contracts in place (e.g., homebrewers).

    Cheers!

I eagerly jumped on the YVH website about an hour after receiving their email saying the new Galaxy hops were available. Everything was already sold out! 2 oz, 8 oz, 16 oz. In less than an hour!

Same here . . . quicker than an email can be processed, they were sold out. I'm betting they'll push the price the next time it's available (if only someone will take that bet).

Here's an interesting aspect of hop availability (Galaxy) from a commercial brewer's point of view. Other than "trying to make a profit" it's the same dilemma of home brewers:

It was available on the website for a few days before they sent the email out. Hops show up there before they notify people that they have them. Managed to grab a pound.

Thanks for the tip. When I checked in they were out of 1 pound packets, but had 46 of the 8 ouncers available. By the time I placed my order they were down to 26.

If any one had taken my bet (see above) they would have won. YVH did not raise the price . . . it's still outrageously high, but that's the price of brewing with the Big G. BTW, they do have great prices on some C-hops & Willamette. Supply & Demand . . . still the biggest kid on the block . . .

Great thing about Galaxy is you only need to use half as much. Becomes a little less spendy that way I guess. I little goes a long ways.

. . . just checked back, no more 1 lb'ers or 8 ounc'ers . . . only 2 ounce available. Took them less than eight hours to sell 46 packets of 8 ounce. Any other suppliers (in this hemisphere) have the Big G available?

Craft Beer &Brewing Magazine did a podcast with the founders/brewers at Hop Butcher out of Chicago. They claimed that when combining galaxy with other hops, they found 15-20% galaxy was the range so that the other hop flavors could be noticed. Anything more than that, and the galaxy overpowered the other other hops

I would think that the value would be highly dependent on what those other hops are. In my experience Citra hops are extremely potent from an aroma/flavor perspective. I do not think I would notice the Galaxy if it was only 15-20% of Galaxy/Citra combo.

    Cheers!

How much Galaxy have you used? It crushes everything trust me. Citra included.

Cellarmaker guys say basically the same thing. They use it 1:4 ratio when blending with other hops if you want any presence, Simcoe, Mosaic, Citra. Doesn’t matter.

Sabro is the same way. I think that Hop might even be more potent than Galaxy.
