This will hopefully be my first non-kit brew, so I want to make sure I'm not missing anything important as far as the recipe goes.

    OG: 1.056
    FG: 1.011
    ABV: 5.8%
    IBU: 95 (?)

    7 lbs Light DME
    1 lbs Golden Promise

    1oz Warrior (60min)

    1oz Galaxy (10min)
    1oz Amarillo (10min)

    1oz Galaxy (0min + 15minute stand)
    1oz Amarillo (0min + 15minute stand)

    2oz Galaxy (dry hop)

    US-05

Brewer's Friend has it at a very light SRM (4.9) and a very high IBU with lowish ABV in my mind. Does this check out or am I missing something? I'm hoping to get a nice juicy Galaxy IPA from this.

    Thanks!

Looks good. I like non malty simple beers with Galaxy. I usually try to keep the bittering units to around 10 BU per percent ABV. Personally, I would drop a little of the warrior in the bittering charge and shoot for something like 58 IBUs. You could also bump up the abv to keep some balance instead.

Drop the warrior to 0.5oz, bump up the DME by another lb? I'll probably only be doing a 3 gal boil and then top it off for 5.5.

Your OG is a little low for an IPA, and if you're not doing a mini-mash with the GP...then I would remove it.

I just kegged what became an extract Passion Fruit Galaxy DPA, and am very pleased with the outcome.

    .5 oz Galaxy @ 60

    1 oz Galaxy @ 15,10,5 and 2 oz @ FO with 10 min hop stand/whirlpool

Anyway, really happy with the outcome...lots of passion fruit from the hops, but I also added 1/4 C fresh squeezed passion fruit juice 5 days into fermentation.

    Anyway, just a consideration.

Hmm alright. Is there a best way to do flame out hop additions without a whirlpool?

Well, I just use a brew spoon to stir the wort for 10 min = "whirlpool." So, assuming you can do that...you'll be good to go.

Just to make sure you're doing it properly, you should be bringing the wort down below 170° before the "hopstand/whirlpool" period. Otherwise you'll continue to have isomerization going on.

I'm not sure the OP heard that part...personally I'd add some DME and a little sugar

I made an IPA with 1 pint of passion fruit consintrate and dry hopped with mosaic.

As already said, the Golden Promise needs to be mashed. And, I see no point in mashing that small of an amount of grain, you would never notice it. You should just drop the GP and add a little more DME to compensate, but 7# of DME should get you to your gravity (or close enough).

Another comment on the grain bill. As others said, the GP is a base malt that needs to be mashed. Personally, I've had good luck replacing that GP with Crystal 10 or 20 (no higher for this brew) for a bit of sweetness and color. Plus it is a steep able grain versus one that needs to be mashed.

Was it 100% passion fruit? Literally all of the concentrates I found contained another juice as well...even the ones that said "100% Passion Fruit" on the label. I'd like to be able to try it with concentrate in the future, considering the cost of passion fruit...and how much of pain it was to extract the juice.

yes was pure concentrate, my daughter made it, then shipped it fast to me. She said it was a lot of work, like making coconibs from scratch for me. I'm a lucky dude!!!

I was thinking that the OG was a little low too. Your IBUs will be more like 65 or 70, depending on the AA of the hops. 90IBUs would be a little rough. Google for an IBU calculator and plug in your AAs and your times.

A simple 1:1 ratio of bittering unit to gravity unit would do great for an IPA

For a 1.070 OG beer that would be 70 IBUs.

I think this brings up a point alot of new brewers miss, ibu to gu ratios. Designing great beers goes into it. I think this recipe is going to be way too bitter. A 2:1 ratio is bonkers. I would dial back the warrior and let the late additions shine.

I don't get too hung up on numbers and ratios. It's possible to brew a 90ibu beer that drinks like a 60ibu beer. Some hops have a higher perceived bitterness than the ibu suggests. Some hops have a lower perceived bitterness than the ibu suggests.

Using less Warrior and keeping the rest the same is a good move unless you appreciate bitterness.

I think it looks good...if you want to use Golden Promise, then up that to like 6lbs (double crushed for better efficiency), do a BIAB mash @ around 150-154 for 60 minutes and then drop your DME to account for the mash. I like Warrior, but I'm a big fan of the way Galaxy bitters myself. Drop the Warrior and go with an ounce of Galaxy instead. You are using the same basic hop schedule and amounts that I use for most of my IPAs and have been super happy with the balance it brings to an IPA/pale ale. You should expect a great brew!

I'd consider upping the dry hop a bit. A lot of the new breweries are doing less and less hops in the kettle and more dry hop to get that really juicy tropicalness. Honestly I'd probably double your dry hop and maybe go 5 oz if you have the Galaxy on hand to do so.
