I recently purchased some Galaxy hops and have been trying to find a recipe for a Galaxy Pale Ale or something similar. Only thing is I am just extract brewing right now. Anyone have some suggestions on the malt extract, specialty grains, yeast, etc to use? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!

    Cheers,

    Tim

Well it depends on your batch size and what your goal is apa/ipa/IIPA but the recipe I'd go with is extract to 1.060ish late in the 60min boil. Go 50ibus at 60min and the rest late in the boil/whirlpool/dryhop. 1056/001 yeast, oxygenate, pitch rate, yada yada yada...

I'd consider using 50% pale extract and 50% maris otter or munich extract, with zero to 5 % English crystal malt, ibus 35-40, healthy amount of finishing hops, and chico yeast.

All good advice, but if trying to get the "Galaxy experience", use the most bland 2 row you can find (low L NA 2 Row) and don't waste the Galaxy on bittering (use something else or hopburst)...enjoy...late additions and dryhopping especially with a LITTLE Nelson Sauvin for hop complexity : )

Just find a recipe you like and sub in the galaxy. For extract use light DME. I would skip any crystal as the dme usually caramelizes and the beer will be darker than if you were doing all grain. Some of my best IPAs with extract I just used dme and skipped any specialty grains. Add .5 - 1 oz at 60 then add hops at 15, 10, 5 and flameout. I would gom1.5 oz for each addition then 2oz at flameout and then 3oz dry hop.

If I went with a light DME would it be the only addition of an extract? Also any suggestions to how many pounds of a light DME would be needed. I am aiming for a light and hopefully brighter color APA instead of an IPA.

6 pounds of dme per 5 gallon batch size will give you an OG of 1.052 or so.

FYI, there are various recipe creation programs that you might find helpful for things like how much DME to add, how much Galaxy hops to add at what times to get targeted bitterness, and so forth. I used Beersmith to figure out the DME addition. However, there are free programs online that you could use. I'm not aware of all of them. Off the top of my head, there is Brewtoad, which looks user friendly. Others will chime in with their favorites, perhaps with a little prompting.

We have a really popular beer down here in Australia that's all galaxy, Stone and Wood Pacific ale. Half light dme, half wheat dme. OG 1.046 or so, big on the late additions. Not hard to find a clone for it, I've made it before and it's as good as a summer session beer you could ask for. Might be too low ABV for some people, but it's a cracking beer and a very simple and cheap brew.

I tend to keep 6# Pilsner DME and 1# wheat DME on hand to do a quick batch of any number of styles. It'd definitely work well for what you're trying to do.

Thanks so much guys for the suggestions. I worked something out using beersmith. Hopefully it comes out well!

I've been toying around with additions you suggested and the IBUs are coming out somewhere around 80-90. Seems a little high but I am tempted to try it still.

Kick back the 60 minute as you'll get the most bitterness from there. Less 60 allows for more late additions, which give you more flavor and aroma.

    Try:
    1 oz - 15min
    1 oz - 10min
    .5 oz - 5 min
    1.5 oz - flameout and let steep for 20 - 30

Try those additions and then tailor the 60 to get your desired ibus.

Not sure what software you are using but if it's beersmith it seems to high a high hop utilization then I get.

I am using beersmith. I put in .5 oz of Galaxy @ 60mins. I might try switching it up to one of the other hops I have leftover (Cascade, Centennial, Mosaic).

I would think both centennial or Mosiac would be a good pair. You could go 50/50. Galaxy and mosaic would super dank. Also, the hop additions I mentioned would be for a 5 gallon batch so if you're doing a smaller batch adjust accordingly. I suggest keeping the galaxy as the primary dry hop used, love that aroma, but that's me.

Just changed to using my own kettle as part of the calculations in beersmith and the IBUs jumped 25%+. Went from the extract brew with a starting volume of about 3.5 gallons that was default selected and moved it to a pot with the same full boil volume as my own. Just when I thought I had this all dialed in!

I am no recipe builder but the abv is really low at 4.9%. If you added some more dme to boost up the abv it would give you less ibus. If you want a lower abv beer then yeah use less hops, espically the 60 min. When I changed the equipment on beersmith it messed up my receipe. Since you are doing extract I wouldn't even worry about it. If you can do full boil don't even mess with the my equipment section. Just estimate about 1.25 gallons water for boil off. Thus, if you want 5 gallons in the fermenter use 6.25 gallons or 6.5 gallons.

I think the my equipment is throwing your recipe off because that's a pretty stock hop additions for a 5 gallon ipa that should be around upper 60s
