I am heading down to Galveston with family and am curious about recommendations for must stop beer places in the area. Bottle shops, breweries, restaurants, etc. Also any great beers that are out right now that likely isn't available in MN would be great.
We will also be taking a trip to Houston for a day so recommendations along that route would be awesome as well. Thanks in advance!

The Spec's on Smith St./downtown Houston has a large, varied and good selection of beer. I'm not real up on the bars and restaraunts in Houston. I know even less about Galveston. Another one in Houston is the D and Q I think its called. Haven't made it there yet but have them on twitter and they regularly get in good stuff.

No idea what the distro is like in MN but some Texas breweries that may or may not distribute up there might be Lone Pint, Jester King, Karbach, just to name a few. I'm still learning them myself.

Karbach and Lone Pint are both in the Houston area, though Lone Pint is up north a bit in Magnolia.

    Houston Breweries:
Karbach: Most everything is solid, get Zee German Pils, Three Legged Lab(stout), BBH or BBH Chocolate if you can find it on draught. Their pale ales and IPAs are also good.

    Saint Arnold
: Pretty good as well, the new Divine Reserve is good if you can find it, Endeavour is a very good double IPA if fresh (I like Art Car IPA also).

    Lone Pint:
Yellow Rose is probably the best IPA in Texas.

    8th Wonder
and Southern Star make a very good coffee Porter and stout, respectively.

    Austin Breweries:
Jester King for farmhouse ales (bottles only): Autumnal Dichotomous, Noble King, Wytchmaker IPA, El Cedro.

    Live Oak
makes a very good Pils and Hefeweizen.

512 makes a very good Pecan Porter and IPA.

I second what thatche2 recommended and would add Galveston Island Brewing.

Food: Cajun Greek (any seafood but the Greek burger is legit), Saltwater Grill, Shrimp n Stuff...avoid anything on the pleasure pier for eating, all tourist traps. Gaido's is an institution and someone should try it at least once, I recommend the Snapper Michael, their signature dish.

For breakfast, you must go to Mi Abuelitas on 45th street. Best Mexican breakfast ever and very local. Very friendly people and chips and salsa are good in the morning. Bronco Burrito for breakfast is also great. There is a Spec's on 61st and Stewart that should have some things.
