hey all, headed to meetings in early Jan in Galveston. Traveling through Houston so looking for some local recommendations to stock up for the week before making the drive to Galveston. Also might have a free pm that could end up in a brewery visit. Looking for lagers / hops recommendations, a good bottle shop In Houston would be best . Also impressed with the spindletap that I have had before, does that hit distro? Anything in Galveston worth hitting? Thanks!
Others will probably help with Houston but while in Galveston, I recommend going to Brew Bros, Beerfoot, Devil & the Deep, Galveston Island & Stuttgarden Tavern on the Strand. Cheers!
Well for lagers I know people would recommend the Saint Arnold 5 O'Clock Pils. I personally thought that it was more unbalanced especially fresh at the taproom. When I go to Houston I go to stores to pick up lagers from Stesti. They are a small Czech brewery in the countryside North of Houston. Make a very good Bohemian Pilsner in their Pivo Pils and a very good Dark Lager. I haven't bought their lighter lager or fruity beers yet though. I enjoyed the Blue Testament Pilsner from Back Pew brewing. I got it at Specs and it would probably be classified as a Classic American Pilsner style. It's brewed with blue corn and it has a noticeable corn flavor along with moderate hop aroma. I don't know all that much more about what's available in the stores from local breweries. Although I did see a can or two from Spindletap the last time I was in Austin. I don't know what they distribute but I'd assume you can find something in a store from them. Just maybe not their hyped haze offerings. I can't suggest any other hazy hoppy beers because I don't go to Houston very often if I can help it and I don't know what of that stuff is on shelves or what releases are coming up. I wouldn't bother with Karbach even though they have a few lagers.
Seems Houston Haze from spindle tap is now being released in 6 packs of 12 oz cans, just saw the post on twitter. So you should be able to find that around Houston.
For other, general Houston recommendations, there are several other threads. One is just a few spots down from this. The Galveston recs from the first post are spot on.
Not sure if you're here yet or not but... Bottle stores - Spec's downtown Houston (on Smith St.) - Shell gas station (In Friendswood @ corner of Blackhawk & FM528 which is comfortably on your way to Galveston). Breweries: - Great Heights - Hollar - Brash (All relatively near each other and all have good examples of the styles you listed as interests). Check their hours; most are Thurs - Sun businesses. Lastly - pick yourself up some Lone Pint Yellow Rose. Thats well worth taking home to Wisconsin and if you look hard enough, you can find in within fourteen days old 'round these parts.
Update... I was able to get some yellow rose that was from the last week of Dec, good stuff. Also hit Stuttgart and Brew bros. Some nice taps and togo bottles at Brew bros. A big thanks everyone! Cheers!!
