The first (legal) beer I bought was Shotgun Betty. Then Tommyknocker maple nut brown. Then I went to Yeti and my life was changed. :grinning:

I was never near the big beer giants, myself. Hated macro lagers. One night at a BJ's Brewery opened my eyes to ales and I never turned back.

My gateway beers were Tatonka Stout, Harvest Hefeweizen, Nutty Brewnette, PM Porter and Jeremiah Red.

My dad has always been into craft beer and home brewing and whatnot so just from sneaking what was around back in high school I started off with the New Belgiums, Great Lakes, Goose Islands and the like before I ever even tasted any of the Bud/Miller type crap. Which means I didn't really have a "gateway" beer but the first one I remember absolutely loving was GL Dortmunder.

Stone Arrogant Bastard, paid a pretty penny for it at the time too.

Gouden Carolus Cuvee Van De Kaizer when I was younger. That got me really into beer. Had no idea it could be so complex. Never really had any american craft beers until I moved to the states. The first was Arrogant Bastard and loved it. Not as much anymore but it always has a soft spot for me

My first legal beer was a Heinekin Dark on the day I turned 18, sometime back in the last century. There was no such thing as craft beer and home-brewing was still illegal. It didn't take long to discover Guinness and Samuel Smith's, Ringness and Aase, Pilsner Urquell and Adelscot. Then Sam Adams and Pete's Wicked came along and it was off to the races.

As others have noted, this particular topic comes up frequently. That's fine, but I think 3 months since the last post is a bit too recent (let's try to at least keep this down to a once a year topic please). Shutting this one down. For those who wish to continue to participate, please go to the thread listed above.
