Do you have to be such a bastion of hope and optimism Terry? I don't doubt you're likely right, but dammit!!! FH season is one the things that makes living in the NW such a special experience. At least from a beer standpoint. So I'm going to continue to look forward to FH season in the NW, and I'm going to continue to hope and expect that we'll see a plethora of great FH beers in pdx!

I like being pessimistic, that way I'm often pleasantly surprised. Optimism only leads to disappointment .

Permit me to suggest an alternative philosophy: hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

    Cheers!

Generally yes, I think pumpkin beer has a place at my table through Thanksgiving.

Would I buy this batch from July in November though? I doubt it.

Jeez, still having this types of discussions in 2020? Seasonal beers come out early every season, not just pumpkin beers - get over it....learn about how beer is distributed, and worry about something important....gawd

How goes that saying? "Opinions are like a-holes, we all have them?"

Pumpkin haters every year just crack me up; if you don't like the style - fine....why trash the style or that they come out earlier than you like? Many many other seasonal beers come out months before their "season" and there are few threads here about it.........some of us enjoy pumpkin beers, fest / okto fest beers, etc in the late summer / fall........

Does it make you feel superior in some way to bash a particular style you do not care for?

These "discussions" every late July - August are just tedious after a while....sorry

Well said @BeerVikingSailor I don’t understand it either. Who cares what other people drink or enjoy, to each their own. People love to hate and I’m not sure why it’s so cool to dislike pumpkin beers either.

Saw these in my local store yesterday too! At least it waited until August this year. :stuck_out_tongue:

Same, and I love Cold Press Pumking too.

It's just the IPA crowd who wants every single beer on the shelves to be loaded with hops.

I love pumpkin beers and the hatred makes me laugh because it's one of the least offensive styles if you don't really care for them because they come out only once a year. And it's not like they bump shelf space for the $15.99 IPA four pack that tastes just like the other four pack and the four pack next to that so not much to be mad about really (unlike those of us who do lose beers due to said IPAs).

 Well, it is sorta a primary reason this website exists...
Otherwise why read beer reviews or most of the threads in the forum?

I’m taking about the hate, I mean I could sit here and trash peoples likes and dislikes. That is different from discussion/reviews with details to me.

Gonna have to echo @jonphisher and @BeerVikingSailor here, it’s pointless to throw hate around for people’s tastes. Sure, it’s mostly all in good fun, but some people care wayyyy too much. I for one picked up a 4 pack of Pumking 2 days ago and I’m loving it already, makes for a perfect last beer of the night

I'll drink Oktoberfests/Marzens any time I can get them. One of my absolute favorite styles of beer.

And Celebration is my favorite IPA of all time, so it can't get here soon enough.

Isn't the idea of a pumpkin beer that it's made from fresh pumpkin?

If that's the case, then it doesn't make any sense for these beers to be bottled in July. Pumpkins need about 100 days after the last spring frost to mature. In Southern Tier's region, the last frost was probably similar to where I live - very early May. In this case the pumpkins growing in the region might be ready for harvest starting about 10 days from now. Even if the last frost was in mid April, the pumpkins would just be maturing in the last few days. Much too late for a July or even August release of the beer.

Given the timing, Southern Tier must be using last year's pumpkins or shipping them in from some much warmer climate. Either of these would make the idea of a 'seasonal' beer completely meaningless. By putting Pumking out so early, they're undermining the very spirit that the beer is supposed to inspire, and thus ruining any appeal it might hold for me.

I would guess that a lot use pumpkin purée but I’m not 100% sure. But with the timing I’m would assume that’s what most have to do. Is there any smaller local brewery around you that does brew with local pumpkins?
