An exchange with @JackHorzempa had me looking back at the ama with Greg from Stone and I was honestly shocked by @Snowcrash000 's description of the German market for modern "craft" beer. It was absolutely dismal. And for all sorts of reasons. But to me this one stands out, after reading this thread

It sounds like lots of craft beers have just showed up on shelves with fat pricetags and then sat and rotted.

In the US in my drinking time (just since c.2008/9 I have watched as craft beer went from something that was available largely directly from the breweries and at specialty beverage stores or some nicer groceries in some areas into something that is available at pretty much any beer retail outlet AND thousands more individual breweries. But the key to the timeline is that the trend started very small, catering to a very small number of consumers who were willing to pay the premium, and then growing to meet an organically increasing market. As Greg Koch's statements indicate, it seems like Germany is in that very early phase but is experiencing breweries trying to operate as if it is the same market as in the US

My question now is, how are actual microbreweries fairing? The types of places that don't try for wide distribution and instead are focused on producing high quality beverages? Are they stable? Growing? Gaining any kind of broader visibility?
